How come Motti didn't know of Jedi?
He looks like an older person, seeing as the Clone Wars only happened 20 years earlier shouldn't he know of them?

this the "Sad Devotion" Guy, right?Gandalf wrote:He looks like an older person, seeing as the Clone Wars only happened 20 years earlier shouldn't he know of them?
Easy. He sees them as all dead, so obviously their Force didn't help them. + Propoganda.
Plus the fact that there were only 10,000 Jedi. Odds are he only heard stories about them. Palpatine coudl easily tell the Galactic Publci that the GR lied, and the Jedi never existsed. Only a select few would know any different.

I don't know if there's anything in that quote to say that he didn't know of the Jedi ... as pecker suggests, they're all dead, what use could they be. And let's face it: he was kinda right talking to Vader. The Dark Side was of no use in conjuring up the stolen data tapes, or give him clairvoyance to find the Rebel's hidden fortre .... ack ... ack ......

Vader would be assuming they didn't know about Obi-wan or Yoda. He had trained as a Jedi even if he switched allegiance.Muad'Dib wrote:Maybe Motti was playing it safe knowing how much Palpy hated them. Don't forget Moff tarkin suggests that Vader is the last Jedi. Maybe Palpy kept his use of the force secret.
Palpatine never did whether anyone knew about his abilities or not.
And according to Wedge's Gamble, the imperial propoganda trumped up the corruption charges against the Jedi and Vader the only true Jedi left. So it's possible that Vader was considered the last of the Jedi in the eyes of the populace at large.

I assume that he did know of the Jedi and their powers, but that he thought the Imperial Starfleet was much more powerful and important. He probably remembered that the Jedi had been wiped out primarily by stormtroopers, and considered Vader's powers to be impotent against the DS. Further, he likely did not believe that the Jedi were going to continue into the future, given that he likely did know that the Emperor and Vader were the only ones left.

Here's a quote from A New Hope script:
MOTTI: Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader.
Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure
up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the
Rebel's hidden fort...
I don't think Motti didn't know about the Jedi. He was just being skeptical about their power. And I think there may be some people, even during OR era, which doesn't believe too much on Jedi's power.

Motti was perfectly correct.Jedi may be excellent ambassadors but their powers are not really that impressive.Certainly their tricks are not enough to save them from the heavy artillery:twisted:Kreshna Aryaguna Nurzaman wrote:Here's a quote from A New Hope script:

Was Motti on the DS when it was destroyed?
If not, imagine what happened the next time Vader ran in to him.
Vader: "So, still impressed with your technological marvel?"
Motti: "Well the design was pretty sound...hey, how come you and your abilites didn't ...ack ack...ack"

Tagge survived. How isn't clear, most likely called away on some other business.IG-88E wrote:Yes, he was aboard. He was killed along with General Tagge, the guy he was arguing with.

It was probably a combination of Tagge's view of Jedi (better as ambassadors than as viable military assets) as well as a spontaneous spur of the moment kind of thing, especially since at that time they were all frustrated with their impotence at locating the Rebel forces (which were viewed as having pitiful abilities of any sort).
Btw, are there any previous threads discussing at length the abilities of Jedi both outside of combat and in combat, and the import of these abilities (or lack thereof) on their role in the Galactic Republic?
Further discussion on the somewhat disappointing prowess of the Jedi revealed in Episode 2 would be interesting.
