Hey Jon, want to hear something really nasty? I was in Texas about 3 years ago and I had a quick look at the fuel prices. Interestingly enough, they were hovering around the 85 cent mark. That's, what, 30p per gallon?

Anyways, it's about $2.35 here in the Bay Area, with prices likely to be pushing $3.00 a gallon in the summer. Oh, and you say you need to drive 10 miles a day? My commute is 70 miles per day to school, so if you think about it, you pay less towards your gas then me (especially since I drive a car that gets 20 miles to the gallon whereas yours probably gets around 40).

EDIT: And we don't have the wonderful mass transit systems you guys do. Whenever I'm in London, I'm amazed at your Underground system and I would gladly sacrifice my car to be able to have one of those for my regular commute.

You think 35mpg is good? I can do about 50mpg in an 8 year old renault, and it still costs me about £30-40 to fill it up every week or so.

It would be nice to just "not drive" but that would require public transport being a viable option. Today, as my car is out of action, I timed how long it took on public transport from the same time I would normally set off from home in my car.

Car journey all the way from my house to preston college ~30 minutes

Public transport journey from my house to preston college ~2 hours, 10 minutes.

So to be on time by public transport, I have to be out at 7:30 AM, which is complete bollocks I'm afraid.

The way a lot of people afford it is companies often pay for mileage.

I just had to add this picture since it seems so appropriate. This is actually the gas station down the street from me and I was debating posting a pic of it, but CNN beat me to it.

I heard that part of the reason was the switchover to summer blends.

So it might stay stable or decrease slightly in the summer.

No 50 MPG renault will carry 4 adults and their stuff up a small hill, nevermind seat them comfortably. I'm 6'3" tall. no fucking way i can even fit into a Renault Clio or anything that aproaches 50MPG (non-hybrid) for that matter. Besides, on the highway i get more like 38-40 mpg.

At $3.27 per gallon of 100LL of avgas I'll say....no. I'm just happy I get to pay $146 per hour of renting a Beechcraft Duchess multi-engine and not pay a dime of fuel for it. :)

Is that the Shell on Shoreline Blvd? Hehe, thats funny.

At the end of this month my company is moving to downtown San Jose.
Since I live near light rail, I'm gonna try it out. It really depends how much time it takes, since right now free time is more important than saving a few bucks.

30 pence per gallon, man. *shakes his head in disgust*

I do drive quite a short distance per day, indeed- but I like to think I was speaking on behalf of the entire driving population of the UK :P My teacher, for instance, drives (idiotically) 120 miles per day (to our college and back home to near blackpool)- in a rather large petrol chomping BMW 5 series. (Okay, he's got money, but still... he must be paying obscene prices)

Anyhow, i'm with Rye, the convenience of driving over using public transport is undeniable.

I've been walking to work. My precious Neon gets only 23mpg city driving, and it's just over a mile to the parking garage. Throw in the 6 stoplights in between, and that's a lot of gas wasted at stoplights when I could just hoof it there.

But it was raining hard this morning, and Nitram let me take the car so I'd not melt
