Look, co-op just isn't as big a demand on the PC side since players don't usually play right next to one another. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have included co-op, but just that this isn't the betrayal most of you are taking it as.

I'll say it again: ID IS NOT CUTTING OUT MULTIPLAYER!
COOP has a massive auidence in PC games, its the fucking software companies that constantly ignore this. COOP is known to be one of the biggest replayability reasons for a game on the PC and yet the software companies are still removing it.

ID is using the dumbest logic possible in this.

"Ge, we want a singleplayer game so lets remove the singleplayer aspect from the multiplayer part of the game."

Thats fucking stupid. By their logic they should remove all multiplayer EXCEPT COOP.

I know, and it's too bad. But id is hardly alone on this one. Can you think of any PC co-op FPS games besides Serious Sam? I can't.

"Ge, we want a singleplayer game so lets remove the singleplayer aspect from the multiplayer part of the game."
No, their logic is that they imagined the PC single-player version to be played solo. This may sound stupid in light of the fact that the Xbox version gets co-op, but considering that co-op isn't usually expected in PC games, I don't think they cared that much.

Besides, may I point out that despite what is said in the interview, there is a technology difference between putting co-op on a split screen console and putting one on networked PC's. Now, I'm not sure if Doom III supports co-op over Xbox Live, but if it doesn't, then it seems clear that they actually cut co-op out of the PC version because they didn't want to bother with developing even more network code.
Thats fucking stupid. By their logic they should remove all multiplayer EXCEPT COOP.
Meh, I don't really care about co-op on the PC myself. I just don't play co-op games unless they I'm sitting right next to the person I'm playing with which is unusual on a PC.

Anyways, I just wanted to clarify for everyone that not all of Doom III's multiplayer is being cut out since there seems to be a lot of confusion on the subject.

I can understand cutting out co-op because it's too hard to balance and would take too much development time, but when you take the effort and time, and then cut it out only on the platform that is most receptive to it, that makes for the dumbest decision I think I've ever heard in my entire life.

Perhaps they forgot that people have the option of playing more than just cooperative? That is really, well, you know what; I can't even begin to imagine why they wouldn't include cooperative, I loved that stuff in Doom! It really made the single player "last longer".

Given the fact that I hate co-op with a vengence (play a few games where your "team-mates" are more intrested in killing each other and you than actually playing through the game, and you'll understand), I have no problems whatsoever with the fact that Doom 3 will not have this feature. Also given the fact that I wouldn't even give a shit if it didn't even have multi-player support (It's Doom, afterall. You're supposed to play through it while swearing at the game designers for throwing whatever evil things you spend multiple attempts at killing. They are pure evil, afterall)

Given the fact that I don't give a shit about any of your opinions, I am quiet happy to tell you to piss off.

You hate coop because you don't ever get good partners? What the fuck sort of reasoning is that?

You can just go crawl back in your hole and act like an ass alone.

For one thing I WAS joking. (as the smily should have indicated) Secondly I do understand why people would be pissed at the decision, I know I would be a little ticked if they removed Co-op from Halo 2. But as I said, I was just poking fun at alyeskas sensitivity (or is it vulnerability?) around the whole Xbox/PC issue, I dunno, I just seem to get a giddy feeling seeing him angry over the issue, though Im not sure why! Got that Xbox yet alyeska!? Ok ok, i'll stop as I'm just being stupid and trollish.

Alyeska, you're honestly acting like a baby.

Anytime anyone says anything along the lines of, 'the X-Box is OK,' or 'PC? Meh,' you throw a tantrum and call them names, tell them to 'shut up!' etc. etc. It's like I gotta walk around on eggshells so 'Alyeska won't throw a fit.'

In fact, this thread has the appearance of explicitly being created to cater to your whining tendencies.

Smileys don't always mean someone's joking. It could just mean he's a condescending ass. But I apologize for misinterpreting all the same.

The thought has occured to me, but I don't like the idea of buying a console to play an FPS game on an inferior system.

So what. PC players get to play thousands of kick-ass MODs and patches everyday. Who's REALLY getting shafted here?

'No valid reason?' Money is a valid reason. There's much more money to be made selling console games than PC games. Last years sales of console games (not including rentals) was over 5 billion while PC games was just over 1 billion. This trend doesn't show any signs of slowing so you might want to either consider buying an X-Box or get used to 'getting shafted' (as you say).

For the types of games I play (strategy, space simulation, FPS), a console is not an option because its the inferior system.

UT2k4 has invasion, I never played the latest singleplayer unreal game, so I dunno if that had co-op or not, but nobody played that for multiplayer anyway, since that was what 2k4 was about.

Quake 2 was not a minor title and quite frankly, coop made it a much better game than it really was. It gave the game massive replayability. The whole point of Coop is to find a group of your friends and game..now...Say it with me LAN parties. Yes, LAN parties..

The fact remains that the pc is the best suited platform for the likes of coop because of it's powerful specs and the fact you get more than four controllers.

1) Valve forced it on customers - as anyone who has been involved with the HL mod community for years will know, most people didn't ask for or want it.

2) The worst debut possible.

3) Reduced performance in HL games.

4) Was an inexcusably buggy whore for 2 straight years and has been reasonable only recently in that area.

5) Has only recently been LAN friendly.

6) Technology updates via Steam, such as detailed textures and glow shader effects, are brand dependant features that don't work on many cards. Glow shaders, I can somewhat understand, since they are DX9 and need the appropriate hardware (however, they use an Nvidia specific code path, therefore only working on those cards). But the fact that GeForce3-class GPUs and above are required for mere DETAILED TEXTURES leads me to suspect that Valve can't accomplish what amateur coders can in much older engines, such as Doom.

7) Valve, at one point, was throwing Condition Zero on your hard drive without permission.

8 ) Huge chat text in games, making 640x480 difficult to play in.

9) The market is doing fine with traditional patching methods. Steam still requires that you finish downloading content before a game is ready to play. The only real benefit is that you can just open up Steam and not worry about Fileplanet or some other mirror. Even then, that only works for Valve-sponsored games, and if the content servers go down or are overloaded, you're fuxed.
