Im now a govt statistic.
I got caught in a layoff today. On one hand it really sucks, on the other hand at least it is finally over. I can focus on finding a new job, and posting on SD.net.

Best of luck in finding a new job! Any leads? (if you don't mind me asking)TrailerParkJawa wrote:I got caught in a layoff today. On one hand it really sucks, on the other hand at least it is finally over. I can focus on finding a new job, and posting on SD.net.

I dont mind you asking. I do have some leads. A large enough chunck of the company got laid off that all of us are able to exchange info and help each other out.
I just needed a place to vent, because the news has not been released to websites related to our industry, nor to customers. Im sure it will break tomorrow, but I dont wanna be the first one.
It is just about the worst timing though, the market here in Silicon Valley is really bad. Im just glad I made friends with some good people.
-- So anyone out there need to vent on a recent job loss?

Yeah, I know it sucks in Silicon Valley. Hell, it sucks in the entire tech industry right now. Not only are they doing the layoff thing, but it seems about as hard for an technical graduate to get a good job as the moron who majored in underwater basket-weaving.TrailerParkJawa wrote:I dont mind you asking. I feel sorry for todays college graduates. Companies wont give them a chance except as low paid, or no pay, interns. At least the good thing is if you are the typical college grad you can keep working at Costco or Home Depot or wherever and stay at home.Yeah, I know it sucks in Silicon Valley. Yes, I know...and the closest Philips Semiconductors is in Texas... They'sve been having a lot of shutdowns lately, so it's hard for her to save...Especially since she just bought her house last summer.TrailerParkJawa wrote:Philips has a few buildings here in Silicon Valley. You got it. As I have pointed out many times I recently bought a condo.Silicon Valley? Isn't that where you can earn a 6-figure income and be unable to find an affordable house?
Well, I hope you can find a new job. or, you could put on a disguise that makes you look really old, get a fake ID, and retire.
The entire SF Bay Area has the most unaffordable housing in the country.
My condo in Fremont, which is just outside of Silicon Valley, is a:
1 bedroom, it has seperate den which I use a computer room.
its about 16 years old, im on the top floor of a three story unit
lots of trees, it is right next to railroad tracks, and about 800-900 sq ft.
$250,000 - and that is considered a decent deal.
Just to give you some more perspective, a 4 bedroom home costs well over 500,000 in Silicon Valley, most run in the 700,000 plus range if they are new.
And no salaries are not that much higher than elsewhere. They might be 30% higher but housing is almost double in many cases triple.
Although it is my home and I really like it here, most people put up with the ridiculous cost of living, because its a nice place.

Have you served in the military before? The Army's hiring. I've served in the Coast Guard before, and if you love boats, that's a good way to go. If you wish to lead a civilian life and still get all the military perks, you could consider the Air Force.TrailerParkJawa wrote:I got caught in a layoff today. If you have a college degree, you can enter the Army OCS program and become a commissioned officer.

No, I have not served. I wanted to enlist in the USMC back in 89-90 but I got in trouble with some childhood health problems and was DQ'ed at MEPS. I opened my stupid mouth despite what the recruiters said not to do.Have you served in the military before? The Army's hiring. Anyhoo, even if I wanted to go to OCS, I believe Im over the age limit without previous experience. Im 31 now. And I wanna keep my house and stay in the area I live in anyway. I would not be able to do that on a military salary.
I make over $4000 a month as an officer. If you're interested, I'll shoot you the site for OCS to see if you qualify.TrailerParkJawa wrote:Anyhoo, even if I wanted to go to OCS, I believe Im over the age limit without previous experience. You can still do it with a waiver, and the Army is short on officers now, so you could likely get one:

In all likely hood by now, my records have been long deleted.
I had a co worker who was a recruiter for the Coast Guard, ( this was a night time job ) and he said they toss the records every 5 years or so.
Not sure how true that is.
Thanks for the info , but Im happy to be on the career path I have now.
4 years ago I would give it serious thought but not now. Even then I would still stick with the USMC. Although the Coast Guard would be of interest too. You get to help people in the Guard which is a good thing.
