Stardestroyer.net Virus

Post by InnerBrat »

Found this in the inbox for my stardestroyer.net email account:
Dear user of Stardestroyer.net,

We warn you about some attacks on your e-mail account. Your computer may
contain viruses, in order to keep your computer and e-mail account safe,
please, follow the instructions.

For details see the attach.

For security reasons attached file is password protected. The password is "56374".

The Management,
The Stardestroyer.net team http://www.stardestroyer.net
There was a .zip file attached.

Now, clearly, I'm not stupid enough to think that any email provider would send me a .zip file like that, but I was intially alerted, not by the presence of the file, but because I have this email as a personal favour from Mike, and he would obviously not send a formal type email like that to those of us who use it.

It makes me think what my reaction would have been if it wasn't a privately owned domain. Probably the same thing: "it's a virus, bin it", but I'm impressed by the targettedness of this email - throwing the website at the end was a good touch.

Anyone else get something like this?

The bad grammar and the abundance of commas certainly gave it away that it wasn't Mike. My question to the sender of that email: If you're going to mess up in making the email sound credible, why bother in the first place?

Some viruses do that sort of thing automatically.

sounds like just spammer bots. when getting something fishy like that it's just best to email the real management and ask them if anything like that has been sent out.

I work for tech support at an ISP, and I'm contantly getting calls from customers about those e-mails. Naturally I tell them all to delete them and run a virus checked ASAP, but it's a fairly widespread problem.

Viruses, particularly the Beagle and Netsky varieties, are known to do that all on their own. The reason they spread despite being inside a pass-protected ZIP file (WTFH!? FFS!!) is a combination of ISPs' shameless 'don't filter out viruses no matter fucking what' policies and completely clue-resistant soccer moms with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Outbreak Excess.

They use a password-protected ZIP file because it foils virus scanners. The scanners can't check the file if they can't open it.

I got a similar one in my work's e-mail address. I knew it was fishy because it was signed off as Victim Support Tech Support, but i know we don't have our own tech support we employ an outside company to look after our techy stuff.

I've seen em a time or two, we keep a terminal around with two hard drives(One win98 FAT32 formated the other XP NFTS formated) so we can see what these little buggers do, heck we can wipe and restore them in under fifteen minutes

After that assuming the up to date scanners on the machine don't catch it we send it off as a possible new virus to all the normal folks
