Greatest Video Game Moments Ever. (Spoilers)

Post by Anarchist Bunny »

Inspired by the Jay string of FLEM comics where he mentions in two comics.

Kefka takes a gaint fucking laser to the world. And the end of Final Fantasy 6.

So what do you believe are some of the greatest moments in video gaming?

One right off the top of my head is the metroid attacking Mother Brain in defense of Samus, and then giving Samus it's power.

And the nuking of Racoon City.

Seeing the hulk of the TCS Concordia as she lay in a shallow sea. Such a fine ship destroyed doing its mission. Seeing the GTD Galatea die when the Lucifer ambushed it. Another fine ship dead.

Playing Half-Life for the first time and running into a Garg.

The final desperate battle of Homeworld: Cataclysm against the Beast.

To many to list really.

the numerous endings in chrono trigger. they were all great.

the endings for Xenogears, and the motorcycle scene in final fantasy 7, lesee. . .possibly the opening sequence for maniac mansion on the NES as well. and the opening scene for megaman 2.

can't really think of anymore that stick out in my mind right now.

I don't know about in history, but the fireballing of Karak in Homeworld was pretty amazing stuff. Oh, and some of the Freespace 2 stuff, seeing my eulugy after I died saving the universe, and most of the stuff involving the Sathanas and the Collossus.

Metroid Mission Zero (spoiler):
Sneaking through the pirate ship without any weapons except the pathetic energy gun: then finding your new power suit, finding out those few pieces of technology you picked up are the screw attack and plasma gun, hearing the rolling Metroid theme start playing and proceed to beat the fuck out of every space pirate that attacks you.

The intro to the Battletech games: particularly the Mercenaries one where the clan Timberwolf runs into "Big Al" (The 100-tom Atlas) and gets blown to high Hell by an Alpha Strike.

Jedi Knight: When choosing the Dark Side path, killing Jan to solidify your choice.

X-Wing VS Tie-Fighter: getting into an arguement with a high school friend about how badass his new Sidewinder Force Feedback pro (16 button) is ,then proceeding to beat him 15-2 with an old Thrustmaster 2 button, 2 axis.

KOTOR (spoiler?): Having Zalbar kill Mission because she is the most annoying PC ever (even worse than Carth).

Half-Life: Running into the military forces on higher difficulty and running away after killing a few. Only to have them throw a grenade to flush you out, and then cut you down in a murderous crossfire.

Halo (X-Box): Co-op on legendary: fighting on the bridge with elites while Hunters take pot shots at you from the other bridge, slowly moving up one at a time firing, then hiding to reload while your teamate moves up to cover you.

FF2 (IV): fighting out every single battle up until meeting Edward because you were so excited to get the game you didn't bother reading the instruction manual to find out that the RUN command is gone and replaced with L+R.

River City Ransom: picking up a garbage can and rapid fire smashing in into a goon's head then throwing it at his prone body while he yells: "BARF!"

I could go on...

Here are a few of mine

Starlancer: When Captain Foster rams the reliant into an enemy ship, saving another carrier group from more attacks.

x-com: the first time you meet up with a chryss....chyss... the body snachter thing.

Mech Commander: Desperate Measures: Beating the last mission with only one mech left which is missing an arm.

Might as well chip in:

Freespace: The Lucifer's attack on the Galatea.

Homeworld: The Burning of Kharak.

Lufia 2: The ending, where all of the characters that survived the last battle are preparing a celebration in certainty that Maxim and Selan will return, when we're explicitly shown that both died. (Not a spoiler, as the last battle of Lufia 2 and the aftermath are amongst the first things shown in the original Lufia.)

System Shock 2: Finding the "real" Polito.

Xenogears: "Dropping a warship on me is cheating. Here, take it back!"

Starfleet Academy: In simulation of ST:WOK, I was supposed to have Spock get Reliant's codes while I was fighting Kahn but in the end didn't need those codes since Kahn suddenly decelerated the Reliant, causing me to ram it. It was the funniest ST scene ever having the Enterprise cripple the Reliant by ramming the ship and causing the Reliant's nacelles to go into warp.... without the Reliant itself.

Fallout 1 & 2: Killing everyone I saw.

Starlancer: Being executed for accidentally destroying the blackbox of a highly classified destroyer. (I was supposed to look for it in a debris field and I didn't realize until it was too late that I was heading towards it at top speed)

Soldier of Fortune 2: Accidentally shooting my partner in the abdomen when I was trying to put my sniper rifle away.

Soldier of Fortune: Setting the respawn rate to its maximum setting so that everytime I killed a baddie, ten more replaced it.

There are more but I can't remember at the moment.

In an online game of Medieval: Total War, I threw back the Egyptians as the Byzantines and pushing them to the very walls of Cairo. Then, caught by suprise by a massive Egyptian counterattack, the epic battle began on the sands of Palestine...

Switching my depleted infantry forces in the opening stages of the battle for 800-1000 kataphraktoi, khwarizimians and other assorted heavy cavalry, I know that my reserves are weak and that I ought to be able to stop the enemy with my force, but if I can't, then I'm doomed.

The Saracen army approaches...mostly light infantry and cavalry. I route them with ease, and another wave comes on...and another...and another...endless, drowning waves of infantry and cavalry gradually building up to Abyssinian shock troops and Ghulam bodyguards.

The battle takes over an hour, with my weary cavalry forming up, charging, counter-charging, as I wheel, outflank, and generally outmanuever the armies of my foe. As I watch the numbers of my cavalry decline, and as they grow wearier and wearier, there appears to be no end to the enemy horde...until, at last, I hear a triumphant trumpet and a screen pops up detailing my victory.

Byzantine Losses: 632
Egyptian Losses: 2,482

Best...moment...ever.

Deus Ex: Hacking Reyes computer and finding out about the killswitches for the first time. I was like, "You son of a bitch! You didn't tell me about this!" From that point on i didn't trust Reyes!

FF7: Aerius getting impaled by Sephiroph. I was like "Wait a minute, she's one of the main characters (and my parties healer as well!)"

Metal Gear Solid 2: Both the intros. the first one (Snake) for just being fucking brilliant! The second one for making me go "Where the fuck is Snake!?!?"

Duke Nukem 3D: Born to be Wild on kareoke and all Dukes taunts!

More as i remember them

Deus Ex. Tie between fighting Gunther...
I couldn't bring myself to kill the guy, even though he dearly wanted to kill me - perhaps he actually wanted me to kill him.
But I couldn't.
.... and the final stages, because... Well, by that point. I really, really fucking hated Bob Page. So much so that I was pissed that you don't actually get to put a cap in his head, face to face. :)

You can get away with not killing Gunther?
How? When i fought him it gave me two options, killswitch or fight him and when i choose fight him he killed me (numerous times).

I's say my happiest gaming moments are as follows.

Completing Homeworld. It was one of the hardest games i'd ever played.

Installing the SW-vs-ST mod and just staring at the ISD model for an hour

The whole experience of playing Horizions. I nearly wet myself the 1st time i saw a dragon take flight.

You can knock him out with multiple Tranquiliser Dart hits. It takes a while for the drugs to take effect, during which time Gunther will keep on trying to kill you with his flamethrower. You have to run the hell away from him - the whole thing usually devolving into a Benny Hill-style chase around the castle grounds.
Once Gunther lapses into unconsciousness, Simons contacts you and the game continues as before.

Chrono Cross--The scene near Nadia's Bell inside the frozen world with Miguel and the "ghost children".

FFVI--Opera House. Duh.

FFVIII--The descent on the Ragnarok and the conversation between Squall and Rinoa.

Panzer Dragoon Orta--The battle with the insane Dragonmares.

Halo--The final run towards the dropship on the last level on Legendary.

At the end of a four-hour MP Cossacks game, we were tired of playing so we broke all the alliances and sallied forth every unit we had into the battle. Probably 1500 18C Pikemen, 1000 grenadiers, 1000 riflemen on either side, plus hundreds of supporting cavalry and buttloads of artillery. Glorious, glorious struggle. Took up about 2.5 screens by 2.5 screens running 1600x1200.
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.

System Shock 2: Finding the "real" Polito.
There's your number one, right there...

Also "Go into that room, insect, and it will be your grave..."

In the mighty one's shadow, however:

Landing on Tallon IV.
Fighting Meta-Ridley.
Escaping the Pillar of Autumn.
The first time you ever fire the BFG9000.
Syndicate's intro.
Whupping Ghaleon's scrawny behind.
Heading to Hyllis' Moon.
Jacking a Krimzon Guard attack cycle and getting away with it.
Riding Epona for the first time.
Fighting Ganondorf.
Leaving Midgar, and realising you've only just started.
Blasting out of Valua in the Delphinius.
James Sunderland's confession.
Blowing up the Death Star in X-wing
Soul Calibur, after years of 2D fighting.
Firing up my GBA, a day after the Japanese release.
Getting all the Time Stones in Sonic CD.
First time you find Super Sonic in Sonic 2.
Getting a Gold on GT's International A challenges.
Rez - Area 5.

That'll do, for now.

Oh, and minus five billion points for every time a random battle happens.
