Bill Cosby on ebonics

Post by Lonestar »

Linky

Bill Cosby was anything but politically correct in his remarks at a Constitution Hall bash in Washington commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision. To everyone's astonishment, laughter and applause, Cosby mocked everything from urban fashion to black spending and speaking habits.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal," he said Monday night. "These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids - $500 sneakers for what?

"And they won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' ...

"They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English," he said. "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't.' 'Where you is.' ... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. ... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"

When Cosby finally concluded, Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking stone-faced. Shaw told the crowd that most people on welfare are not African-American, and many of the problems his organization has addressed in the black community were not self-inflicted.

Well, in his own way the man has a point. I'm not sure how to respond right off the bat. Comments?[/url]

He didn't say poor people are stupid. He was criticising "black" culture and ebonics. I agree with pretty much everything he said.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Argh...point. He did, however, call people knuckleheads...which seems to me rather harsh coming from Bill Cosby.

I don't see how. He singled out the doofuses that are raising their kids like that. And let's face it: there are people like that. I don't think that everyone poor or black does things like that, but I know that some of them do. And seriously, I think he's got a point.

I didn't say it was a harsh statement...I said it was Harsh coming from Bill Cosby, at least it seemed so to me.

And yes, I think the man has a point. Especially as I live in the "Dog House" on ship with fucking BET and Rap shit playing 24/7.

By an amazing coincidence, the only people of color on the ship that regular watch this also belong to the "stupid" rates.

Comedians almost always HAVE to be harsh in order to be funny. For example, I watched a television show the other day on Comedy Central whereby "If you've ever opened a beer during a eulogy, you might be a redneck."

Bill Cosby has always been critical of ebonics and "black" culture. Remember what happened when Wanda Sykes went to interview him at the awards ceremony?

Speaking from my experiences from attending an inner city high school, and further experiences in college, I can attest that rap and glorification of things that are getto are indeed for stupid people. Of all the minorities I knew, without expception those who worshiped gansta rap where dumbshits with no initative who floated through life like ths usless terds that they were, while those who did not try to emulate to the getto lifestyle went on to become successful.

I agree with this, come to DC and see how bad the school system really is. The teachers don't really care, the students come out with only a 9th grade education. The main university ( the University of the District of Columbia ) is little more than a remedial high school( thats the reason why i left and went to strayer).

I look at it more as poor culture, not black culture. Because white, hispanic, black, asian, ect if they come from a poor neighboorhood they all speak the same way.

I guess my thing about "ghetto culture" is this: I have no doubt that people who come from those areas, with that sort of a background, and succeed have had to endure things that most other people haven't had to deal with. I know that those people have faced hardships I've never had to go through, and their success is testament to their ability to achieve through adversity. However, I don't particularly see people who play into these things like the huge sneaker bills and the "ebonics" culture as being impressive. I realize that they face other hardships, but I also don't see them as dealing effectively with the problems, and honestly I don't really think I'm required to respect people who do things like that. I have every respect for people who work their way up the system from that kind of a beginning, and I wouldn't trade places with those kids on the street corner, but at the same time I have problems showing them respect if they're running around like the people Cosby's complaining about.

The worst thing is the deliberate glorification of poverty. When a kid dresses like a bum for lack of good clothes, it's because he came from a poor neighbourhood. However, when a kid goes to a middle-class shopping mall and buys designer clothes designed to make him look like a bum, it's not because he came from a poor neighbourhood; it's because he's a fucking idiot.

I think the title of this thread is misleading. I thought that Cosby actually said "Poor people are stupid" in those exact words, but that's not really the case. So I'm going to change it to be a little more accurate.

It's the whole "stay black/keepin' it real" mentality that they, for some reason, wear like a badge of honor. It's like Chris Rock said: a black man from the ghetto returns to his neighborhood with a Masters degree and he's treated like an "Uncle Tom." He returns to his neighborhood after being released from prison and he's treated like "the fucking man."

White people do it too though. They embrace their redneck bullshit like it's part of their cultural heritage.

If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! rednecks displaying their confederacy flags as though they somehow think they're living during the civil war era, is what i believe he's referring to.

I always did like Bill Cosby.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Have you ever seen the short film Bill Cosby On Prejudice? It basically stars Bill Cosby making bigoted remarks about every racial, ethnic, religious, and regional group out there, including blacks and southerners. I wish I could find a transcript, because it is hillarious.
