The first time was it's original appearance, because I happened to be in front of the damn thing when it arrived! I saw those Beam Cannons suddenly appear around me, and I ran like hell.

I can't believe I forgot Mafia. The entire last level is absolute gaming brilliance.

My first encounter with a Sathanas was a bit too close for comfort. I was literally on top of where it came out of hyperspace or whatever it is and I ended up afterburning away to try and avoid being rammed to death. Didn't make it though.

It's the latter. He had been programmed to trigger at the phrase "Heart of the Tiger", which Thraktah (Is that spelled right?) just happens to say in the beginning of the game. This isn't said directly in the game, but is in one of the deleted scenes.

Putting a .223 pistol shot through the Overseer's eyes and watching his unique death animation was my favorite bit
For example, suppose I wrote a book that within 30 years of the moon landing millions of people could be duped by bad science and endless hectoring into believing that it didn't happen... nah, can't do that, too unbelievable for a fantasy novel, right?--Terry Pratchett, The new Discworld Companion

I loved that ridiculous pistol. As I recall, you could only get it by getting to a certain level then clearing out some guy's house that had been taken over by Raiders.

Freespace def had quite a few. Especialy Freespace II.

"DIVE DIVE DIVE HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT!" is very much up there. I mean you almost ALWAYS, ALWAYS enter missions and have a nice long time to gun up and orient towards the action, take scope of the situation and start in.

THIS time (and I had my speakers up very loud because I had been listning to cool music on the precious mission) the game comes up...with a fucking Sathanas MOVING right at you and you hear the screaming order...I jumped halfway out of my chair while yanking the joystick forward and slaming the afterburner key so hard I damn near broke it.

That moment just rips into you the first time like nothing else. Then clawing back to self control and stabalising as you get back under control, your heart going like a jackhammer...

Another one is Mechwarrrior 2 Mercs. When the Clans first officaly make contact. You have the previous mission with the 'unknown bandits' attacking (stupid Claners, let me get in your six with 5 MPL's :P) but this time the dropships fly over and they call you an Inner Sphere barbarian.

There is something about that level...possibly the complete lack of music and twilight red sky that just sets a chilling mood. Then the Omnimechs come stomping towards you...

Of course at that point I grin, hit the jump jets and unleash all manner of hell on the barstards :D

Yeah. It's a bum in the hub whose farm has been taken over by raiders. Strangely enough you can buy it pretty much everywhere in Fallout 2 and the description still says that it's a unique weapon.

And the best part of that fight was grabbing the Humvee and driving through all that, at least for me. :D Absolutely manic, the beginning of that level.

another one that i felt the need to mention.

Metal Gear Solid, on the PS1. sneaking into the bathrooms in the base and playing all kinds of fucked up pranks on them using the invisibility mode after you beat the game first time around. such as strapping c-4 to their back when they can't hear you behind them and are taking a leak, or punching them while they're doing business for kicks.

System Shock 1:

-Placing a C4 charge on one of the antennas, turning around only to see you're trapped by a forcefield.

"Make yourself comfortable, hacker. Stay a while."

...and then working feverishly when juiced up with drugs in order to OPEN THE DAMN THING BEFORE THE CHARGE BLOWS!!!

System Shock 2:

-encountering the Midwife Cyborg for the first time. Then finding Nurse Bloom's logfile on it...

"The genetic sequence he specified for the prototype...it's mine..."

-The Polito revelation, of course. "I AM SHODAN!"

-Getting jumped on by a hybrid yelling "Run! RUN!". I turned around, saw the thing charging me with shotgun...nearly had a heart attack.

-Getting into the cargo hold where Delacroix was supposed to be, only to find her dead...

Planescape: Torment:

-encountering your three previous significant incarnations and learning what a sick bastard you were

-the entire encounter with your own mortality

[hated the ending, though. there was simply no point, no explanation, no epilogue to it]

-"What can change the nature of man?"

Homeworld:

-The firebombing of Karak. I promised the bastards would pay in blood for every single dead Kushan. Recovering the cryo pads, with Fleet Command calmly reading out "One hundred thousand colonists secure...two hundred..." in a serene voice was also incredible.

-The last mission, seeing my giant fleet advance upon the Emperor's flagship. And the ending. The ending was insanely good. Everything played perfectly with the rest of the game, right down to the music in the ending credits. You don't see something like this much.

Homeworld: Cataclysm:

-"Who will remember the crew of this ship? Or are flicker-lives not worth remembering? You are WORSE than the Beast! At least the Beast doesn't PRETEND to be righteous!"

-The ambush mission, with the Khar-Selim showing up at the last minute
"And we brought friends!"

-The ending. Marvelous. You may say whatever you want about Cataclysm, but they did the ending well.

Shogun: Total War

-Repealing wave after wave of enemy attack with just 240 troops, and at the end of the battle, seeing the enemy Daimyo fall down from his horse while he was cowardly running for his life. He nearly made it, too. He died right at the edge of the archers' range :)

-Many a glorious victory against overwhelming odds

Red Faction:

-I disabled the nuke at the end with precisely ONE FUCKING SECOND LEFT. You can't even begin to imagine how I've felt after seeing that goddamned counter stop :) It was SO holywoodish.

Fallout:

-The ending. The rest of the game rocked, but the ending was incredible. Short and to the point, tying well with what preceded it.

I-War

-Every cutscene. There were no better ones in any of the games i've played to date.

-The mission where your ship gets boarded by a pirate, and you strike a deal with him...revealing a hidden cache of loot you've mined beforehand

-The ending when you remain loyal to SecPat, and follow the President's cruiser.

"We have to end it. Right now."

X-Wing:Alliance:

-Hypering into and area to get your sister out from a mining station, and seeing THE FUCKING EXECUTOR leading the attack. Getting out of there from under the Imperial nose was also a treat....of course, later on I realized that you could kill the Executor with the Otana, and the entire moment got cheapened immensely :)

-------------

I could go on like that forever. Ah, memories, memories...

HALO

I had just killed about 50 grunts(Spec Ops) and 10 Elites(also Spec Ops) on Legendary Co-op and I looked around and realized I was a god! :D Then my partner threw a plasma grenade in the middle of the bodies and set off about fifty grenades killing me and hurling my body so high up you could barely see the ground.

The Villa - Castlevania 64. Meeting Rosa, getting chased by Frankenstein in the Garden Maze, the Vampires at the end of the Maze. The whole Villa is one big, great, scary moment.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time - There's too many to mention. Seeing the beauty of Kokiri Forest for the first time probably was the greatest moment. Volvagia was cool to see to and Morpha... Like I said, to many to mention.

Zelda: Majora's Mask - Many great moments in this game too... Though the greatest is easy: Getting hugged by Cremia!! The mechanical bull boss comes in second.

SMB2 Ending - I tried to beat that damned Wart a long time before I succeeded. I felt great when I finally did!

Castlevania 3 - Sypha Ending - I tried for five years to beat this game. It's hard as hell!

Here are a few that come up:

The good old Tex Murphy games (Under a killing moon...)

X-com: terror from the deep: nuff said 8)

Duke Nukem 3D: especially the multiplayer (shrink-gun anyone? 8) )

Half life: the intro, the fact there were not seperated levels but just 1 _big_ level. First time the enemy (marines) actually show intelligence. In old FPS you only needed tto wait them up behind a corner and kill them so i was suprised to see they didnt came but trew a grenade instead).

Unreal: when you get out of the crashed prisonship to see the whide landscape with waterfall, flying birds,...

A few very fun multiplayer games with sudden strike. The most fun was when i was totally cut off from my allies, surrounded by massive soviet forces, short on supplies and forces, only 2 tanks that could actually penetratie the soviet heavy tanks, a flag in nomans land i could not allow the enemy to take or our team would loose. Luckely i had an excellent defencive position and some artillery so i held off attack after attack (with a VERY close margin) eventually turning the tide for our team and eventually win.

AvP: always scared to death when a facehugger got me. A friend who was sitting next to me fell over his chair once

Freespace: seeing the big capital ships shoot

Freelancer: the badlands (or how was it called) really looked like a scary place. And more was yet to come

MOHAA and Call of Duty also had a few (Omaha beach, sniperville, parachute drop, battle of the bulge, defending a building in Stalingrad,...)

X-Wing:Alliance: hypering with a heavy damaged correlian transport infront of a whole fucking fleet of ISD's that are doing target practice + escaping from the exploding DSII

First time i warped in Eve-online + the zooming in the galaxy map

most recent: Far Cry on multiple occasions. Finished it by rushing with about 0.00001 health left

WC3: When you find out that Hobbes was a "sleeper agent"
Oh yeah i forgot. Damn that was good :)

Let's see, off the top of my head:

FFX - Yuna falling through Tidus in the end cutscene
FFVIII - Rinoa posessed onboard the space station
Starcraft - "I love you, Sarge"; "Thank God for cold fusion"
FFVII - Northern crater: Weapon awakens
Warcraft III - Arthas vs Illidan
Diablo - End cutscene
Diablo II - Tyrael vs Baal/Diablo
Halflife - The resonance cascade

I know I forgot a lot. This is what I got in two minutes....
