How Long would SD.net stay up if we were slashdotted?

Post by darthdavid »

Based on the average ammount of traffic slashdotted sites recieve, how long would sd.net remain running if we were linked to on slashdot?

How would they bring this board to doom anyway?~Jason
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

slashdot is one of the most widely read computer news sites on the net. Within hours of being linked to by them more people than most sites see in a year will have clicked the link and visited the site that was linked to. Kind like someone's mail box would be nuked if, on a popular nationally aired tv show someone gave away their adress, an interesting snippet about them and told people to write them if they wanted more info.

Much larger servers than SD.Net have been brought to their knees by the Slashdot Effect.

Show long does the Slashdot Effect last?

Eg: When the next site is posted there, will they all forget about us?

The dreaded /. effect would kill sd.net in a matter of a minute or less.

Even huge webboards like broadbandreports shivers when the /. crowd appears.

I'm surprised this hasn't been deleted yet, or at the very least HOSed.

And lukexcom, that's some interesting reading there.

Don't worry, it's not dangerous. People can't just "slash-dot" something at will. Anybody can post on slashdot, but your post is just one of bazillions and it's not going to get much attention unless someone at slashdot decides to give it attention, by putting it on the front page.

Even then, it might only get attention if a lot of slashdotters are intrigued by its (advertised) content. So it's not as if some troll can just say "hey, I'll slashdot this site because I don't like it!" It doesn't work that way.

Anyway, if the site did get slashdotted the 2Mbps connection would probably max out before the server does. Remember that slashdotters would be able to view but not post or search.

Same thing as Mike posted, names reversed.

Who'd really want to see a "Troll Kingdom" anyway?

Those afflicted by the same curiosity that makes people stare at car wrecks, or the mentally handicaped child as he unsuccessfully swats at flies for an early lunch.

My dorm's laundry server was slashdotted and we were able to get it working again pretty quick. 'Course, its a pretty small page to be transmitting, and the computer to person ratio at Random is greater than 2.

Even if most of these people joined up to post, they're limited to the speed the mods could approve them, and seeing what would happen I assume they would stop approving until the /. effect stops. The bandwidth wuld be filled from millions of pageviews, but we'd be fine after a short time.

The real effect kicks in when one of the editors posts a story with a link. I doubt the /. editors (as incompetent as they seem sometimes) would post a TK story that was obviously meant to just bring down SD.Net.
