American Annexation of Canadian Metropolitian Areas
Mainly this is a question for US and Canadian residents. Do you see the major metropolitian, non-French areas of Canada ever breaking away and joining the United States? Do you see Canada disintergrating as various provinces become independent states? Essentially, what is your vision of the future of Canada?
Which of the poll options do you think is most likely to happen? I'm talking about, say, 50-60 years into the future.
Note that I have almost no knowledge of Canadian politics, so feel free to laugh your ass off.

I voted the same as now, but I can honestly see a point in time were the rest of Canada gets tired of the qusi-frogs being the political elite and basically kicks them out of power and forces the fuckers to say 'eh!' after every sentence.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I would love to see the current supremacy of Quebec in the Canadian system abolished, but I honestly see it continuing as it is for the foreseeable future.

I think it's inevitable that the United States and Canada draw closer together in response to European unification and the ascent of China. I think we'll see a customs and currency union in the next 50 years--one that includes much of the rest of the Western Hemisphere as well. I don't know if we'll ever see full blown de jure political unification between the US and Canada, but the practical effect will be nearly the same.
This is assuming the US doesn't spend itself into full blown collapse. Then you might see New England or the Cascades region petitioning to join Canada.

In a worst case scenario where the federal government really runs the country into the ground, it's possible that from Ontario on westwards will choose to break off & form a new nation. This will leave the maritime provinces out to dry since their federal subsidies are gone and they'll likely suffer a complete economic collapse, chances are they'll end up joining the States. This leaves Quebec, once again without the federal tranfer payments they're in a world of hurt and I very much doubt anyone in north america really wants to deal with them. They'll probably hang in limbo for a while before being assimilated by someone.
More realistically, things will continue as they are now for the foreseeable future.

Would the western provinces really be viable as a nation, or would it eventually get swallowed up by the States? I'm afraid I don't know enough about the western provinces economics.jmac wrote:In a worst case scenario where the federal government really runs the country into the ground, it's possible that from Ontario on westwards will choose to break off & form a new nation. They're certainly low in population, but as far as I know the economies of the western provinces are fairly robust.

They have oil, lumber, and huge amounts of wheat, they would do a good job of it, assuming they don't have to support the Territories. Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan would form a country, Manitoba would probably go stateside if they didn't join with the West, the territories would be immolated into Alaska, Ontario would stand along, the Martimes would fold up like a house of cards and join the States, and Quebec would probably be assimilated wither into America or Ontario.
I sincerely doubt that would happen though- National Unity is usually a fairly large priority for governments and I believe they would give a lot of leeway to keep people happy (repatriating the Constitution to keep Quebec happy, the Meech Lake Accord).

I don't see Canada disintegrating or outright joining the U.S., but RedImperator probably has it fairly well.

I'd agree. I could see an EU type situation taking place - main issue is that, unlike Europe, the US is the veritable elephant and both Canada and Mexico are at the groundhog level or below. So the question is either a) will the US let itself be tied down by a pair of (relatively) midget countries or will Canada and Mexico allow sovereignty to pass to a US dominated organization (Council of North American Ministers or something - senior bureaucrats from all the countries).Rogue 9 wrote:Spell-check wouldn't have helped you; "along" is a real word. The Aliens wrote:Ontario would stand alone, rather. If the second option takes place, they need to really give the organization some real indepedence coupled with some strings. Similar but stronger than the US Federal Reserve System with certain goals set out in stone.
Otherwise, the US politicians will hamstring this body along with everything else they touch. As a backup plan, allow the Canadian/Mexican heads of government to jointly appoint a candidate if the US hasn't done so in a reasonable period of time (the office has been empty for 1 year and the US Senate is still bickering). Also, impeachment/removal of the head must receive a 2/3 vote - one of which must be the US president (avoid involving the US Congress where possible). This gives the US significant amount of power, but hopefully avoids the worst of the US political logjams I always read about.
Is my plan is practical - probably not .

Well...it would be a lot less complicated if those regions were simply to become States of the Union.
