Is there a faster version of a disk defrag?

I'd like to defrag my 40 gig harddrive before it turns to rust and the sun explodes.

simply start the defrag before you go to bed. by the time when you wake up it should be almost over.

Kind of depends on the OS. Under Windows 9x, I've found the defragging utility in Norton Utilities to work significantly faster than the one that comes with the OS, while the one in 2000 and XP works well out of the box (at least for NTFS). Even running the fastest defragging you can, however, it'll take quite a few hours (moreso if your drive has <25% free space), so you might as well do as Darth_Zod suggests. I've never had a defrag take less than four hours on my 45 GB drive.

Defragging regually tends to cut down the time. Say every month or two rather than every year or two

It takes more than 4 hours on my k6-II 500. And until an upgrade I will reconsider defragmenting.

I use system mechanics defragger, its quick, fast, havn't touched the XP defragger.

If you are going to use the Windows defrag I'd suggest putting your computer in safe mode first and then defragging it. It seems to go much faster and has far fewer restarts that way.
