Mine are cropped and resized from the original pictures that I keep in my character art folders. Most of them either follow the Asuka theme or are pictures that I like how they look or think would be interesting to use as avatars. Rarely do I actually manipulate or adjust the image (my "Matrix Asuka" avatar comes in three versions: original ("sunset"), regular lighting, and Matrix colour scheme).

My avatar is always related to the rest of my profile. I tend to use themed profiles so my Avatar, signature, title, and location will match. As it is I am using a board Avatar because someone was nice enough to upload it.

Ach Dammit man...now where's Cyran?!

Anyway...except for twice my avatar has been literally the same thing in relation to both my name and custom title.

My location on the other hand has no bearing.

I find them, and resize them. Occasionally I will cut them out of their backgrounds and PNG-ify them.

Mine is part of an elaborate set-up to leave no lasting trace of my existence. It's from Catch-22, and I selected it as an enigmatic image after Mr. Bean and several others insisted that I create an avatar for myself.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

I'm pretty sure I downloaded mine directly off the Dodge website. All I did was resize it.

Just got mine off a JAG website. Haven't had to change it in any way, shape, or form, and haven't looked back since (aside from the two, yes, two changes I made, and they were brief and for a limited purpose anyway).

I got my current one from a picture that a friend's wife sent to me. It was meant to be a joke because of the shitty day she was having, so I took it, cropped it with Irfanview, and made it mine.

My previous avatars have all been made from a variety of source material. Several have been cropped and Photoshopped screengrabs, and others were cleaned-up and cropped/resized scans from book covers, DVD slipcases, and comic books. My current avatar is from a scan of the fourth Saikano VHS cover, appropriately cropped and resized. I picked the initial scan up from this site, which is down due to bandwidth excess for the time being.

I still haven't found an avatar that I feel is completely appropriate, even after close to two years on this board, so I keep changing. It's straightforward enough to actually create an avatar once you get source material (simply crop and resize something that you find; Photoshop it if you want to change something), though creating one that's distinctive and memorable in a good way is the hard part.

Created mine myself using some simple shapes made in paint, layered into an image and then flattened into a nifty png with a transparent background, thus you see the color of the background of the site behind it.

You'll notice I've done it to my sig as well.

My avs are all cropped an resized artwork or screenshots. My sig banners I patch together using sprites, though.

Both the Klingon emblem and Vohu Manah's avatar are in fact a Celtic symbol called a triskele.
