"It's not so much the ability to destroy them so much as finding an acceptable pretext to move against them. A war of conquest is unlikely to go over well with no pretext. Whether against the Hajir or the Machines. It is not in anyone's interest to bring the galatic community down on our heads."
The ambassador pauses.
"Trust me, on that you can certainly count of my nation's first hand experience. It is not a pleasant thing nor an easy experience."

"I would imagine not. We are however willing to learn and wait until the correct time. However has for the machines, with the Rape of Terra, everyone has agreed to destory them whenever and whereever found. You would need no pretext there. The whole of known space has declared a state of hostilities against them. I'm sad to say there is not much unity between the powers even now."Trust me, on that you can certainly count of my nation's first hand experience. It is not a pleasant thing nor an easy experience."

"Ah. It seems our recent upheaval has hampered intelligence gathering operations. We have been a bit behind on the news. Certainly any Machine entering Asgard space will recieve a most cold welcome. But I'm afraid any large scale offensive operation must be conducted in unison." Sir Wilhelm continued "As for the Hajir, they seem remarkably docile so far. While we would be interested in reaching certain... understandings regarding them, it would be unwise to move against them with out basis."

"We have no intention of moving against the Hajr. Not unless a good reason can be found. But, that doesn't mean we don't regard them for what they are, it doesn't mean we close our eyes and blindly trust to luck. The UP did not become what it is by trusting to luck. However, if it is permissable we would like to open perament relations with Asgard, as it seems we agree on much."

"I see. Well, clearly we will have much to discuss when the proper procedures have been completed". He turned to one of the officers "inform lieutenant White-Eye to contact Itsil and inform them of our new... associates." He turned back to the commodore "so, would you like something to eat?, we only have ships rations but we can try to prepare something to your liking".frigidmagi wrote:"This planet was the capital of a regilious fanitic state, that declared holy war on the galaxy at large. A group of allied states put an end to that. It was then decided that this state was to dangerous to be set loose without supervision. An occupication was estblished. Afterwards when contact was estblished between the UP and the other powers, we were asked by our allies to aide in maintaining order. Currently we hold this planet alongside our ally the Republic of Nashtar."

Sovereighn confederacy of Itsil
Another city, on another world, the streets were quiet as the citizens went about their daily routine, watched by marines in power armour who patrolled the streets and the tanks which sat like statues on every corner. The air was thick with fear.
But this was not Ix'agal, this was not an occupied world, it was Itsilaar, capital city of a nation who's very name was a testament to the ego of its creator.
Beneath the city, in a fortified room who's location was known to few, the government convened.
"Aliens?, alien empires?. How are we to deal with this?" one elderly senator asked. "We should not deal with them" answered Gretis black-ear "we should have as little contact as is possible, we should never have begun this exploration". A voice came from the far end of the table, it was loud and deep (probably due to an amplifier hidden somewhere) "the time in which it is possible to hide ourselves away and forget about the existence of the greater galaxy has been and gone, minister black-ear". The supreme minister said "this is why we need to expand, you have heard the reports from our listening posts, the chatter of alien voices across subspace, they are getting louder and clearer. From what little we know from them there is a great war afoot, that is why the program of expansion must continue. We have not fought a war in centuries, our military is in decline, a pale imitation of its former greatness, our personnel are simply not experienced enough to fight a real war. That is why we must continue the expansion, and that is why we need allies".

As you have just re-entered galactic politics, it seemed prident to send a special invitation to your nation to send delegates to attend our production of Springtime for Hitler. A satiric musical mocking the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler. This is to be used to jump start diplomatic relations with other powers, and to get to now the people we will be working with.

"Our system of government is a bit complex. We too have seen some influence from the old United States on Earth, although only a small portion of our settlers came from there. There is an elected Grand Council, with two much smaller sub-houses drawn from it, an elected House of Delegates and an appointed Senate. The highest leader is President Sej H'sef, the head of the Council and head of state. Second to him is Chancellor Lisa Arteren, head of the Senate. Third is Speaker Rían Ëlen, head of the House of Delegates."Rogue 9 wrote:"Ah. Our government is a constitutional federal republic. Our current President is Charles Major. Al-Quadim System
The meal had been a relatively quiet affair and it had been a welcome change from his usual aboard his ship. While replication technology allowed a great deal of variety aboard vessels, the Gladsheim food was unique in his estimation. It had a variety of tastes that shifted from the delicious to the unusual, but everything had certainly been quite edible. One dish in particular had been a tad spicier than he had expected, his eyes closing for a moment as he willed his mind to overlook the burning sensation in his tongue. He made a note to take smaller bites of that particular dish, compensating quickly and easily. When the vice-admiral spoke, she had all of his attention. Her words met with a curt nod. “It was very enjoyable.” His eyes following hers as she stood and he joined her in the next room a moment later.
The room seemed quite comfortable, the low table and plush couches catching his attention for a few moments before he noticed what appeared to be coffee. He sat down a moment later, watching the vice-admiral as she spoke. His eyes sliding towards the coffee, before he answered her question. “That is regrettable, but your people have done very well for themselves.” His left hand reached for the coffee, a cup poured before he brought the contents to his lips. It was hot, but he had no complaints. The taste of it was quite remarkable. The vice-admiral’s words about her government’s request met with a shake of his head. “Not at all, the idea made a great deal of sense. Unsurprisingly, we had been considering making such a proposal.” He smiled thinly, aware that the idea had originated in both nations at more or less the same time. It was common sense, and now that the Empire and the Gladsheim were in good relations, it made sense that such a move would be extremely appealing. The Gladsheim received valuable real state, while the Empire received the presence of allies nearby. Internal trade would be more profitable than not, and the systems would be far more secure.
It was the vice-admiral’s last words that surprised him, his cup of coffee drained before being gently placed aside. “It sounds like fun.” His tone was soft, but nonetheless laced with honesty. His lips parting for a moment before closing a few seconds later, he spoke. “It appears that negotiations are going well between the interested powers in Temesvar. I have been asked to assure you that if the situation continues on its current path, the Al-quadim system and two others which had been designated by the Empire as Sharis and Yvela will be ceded in their entirety to the Empire. If that is the case, the gas giants in all three systems will be given in their entirety to your people.” He considered the words for a moment before nodding. “The final word about the settlement is expected to arrive within the hour. Until then, let us use the time to arrange joint maneuvers.”

While we have to question why an alien species should chose to have a musical celebrating a man universally regarded as a petty despot is beyond us, we might be able to send a representative. But far be it for us to make judgements on your sense of taste. Our represenative will arrive, if possible, by a simple diplomatic courier vessel. Armed displays at events like this tend to lead to bad ends.

Capital World, Realm of the Blood King
The Hajr's delegate survyed the document one last time, and then smiled.1. The systems of Oerth and Aber-Toril shall, in their entirety and in perpetuity, be annexed to the Realm of the Blood King.
2. The system of Ravenloft shall be divided between the Realm of the Blood King and the Ousters as follows: The planet of Ravenloft and all stellar objects located within its orbit shall belong to the Realm of the Blood King, whereas all stellar objects whose orbits fall outside that line shall belong to the Ousters.
3. The systems of Esgaroth, Seiben, and Chul'suroth are reserved for the Diaspora and colonies of the Unbound. The Hajr has complete authority over said systems, which it will cede as it pleases to Floater colonists.
4. The systems of Union, Wirmon, and Firi, are entirely the property of the Ravenlock Consortium
5. The systems Al-quadim, Sharis and Yvela are annexed in their entirety by the Veithan Empire.
6. The Systems of Krynn, Navely, and New Hope are under Monacora's sole jurisdiction.
7. Monacora reserves the right to inspect former Arcane facilities on the above planets for the next five years to continue the search for Siliconoid collusion.
8. This treaty will come up for renegotiation in five years, and any unsatisfactory clauses can be amended then.

Unmarked System
It was a spectacular system. Lifeless, but spectacular. When it was born from the void, it didn't manage to become a system one would consider real estate in any sense. It's binary suns were surrounded by scores upon scores of asteroids in varying sizes. The two planets who were unfortunate enough to get formed there were lifeless rocks, devoid atmosphere or any other redeeming assets.
And to make it worse, the system was engulfed in a massive cloud of radiation and plasma, which rendered sensors of almost all kinds quite ineffective.
This also made it a perfect location for the small pirate ship currently cuddled below a rather huge asteroid. Working around Covenant space could get lucrative, but sometimes could get dangerous. And so the Bloodhunger choose this system to make repairs to their systems after an ambush gone terribly wrong.
"What's the fucking status on the hyperdrive?" "Captain" Karl Rowes barked.
"Fuck it, Karl," his engineer shot back, "I work as hard as I can. If you'd get your fat ass over here and helped the rest of us, we were actually finished sooner."
"You son of-"
"Karl, I've got something strange..." He was cut off by the sensor tech.
He reluctantly turned his attention over to her.
"And what might that be?"
"I picked up a massive spike of gravity distortion. very weird. And very near..."
"Weird?"
"Yeah, it isn't a hyper footprint or something I seen before. But my gut tells me it's some kind of wormhole. Some freaky kind. And the computer agrees with me there."
"A starship? How far?"
"It might be one, yeah. It was only roughly 3 light seconds away."
"Scan the area. And careful. If it's prey, we don't want to scare it up..."
She started working on her keyboard for a while, and then grinned bakc up at her captain.
"It is a ship. A rather small one. That's all I can get out from this bloody sensors. The rad field is too strong for anything more detailed."
"A warship?"
"I doubt it. Too small, and the energy signature I could pick up isn't what I'd expect of a warship."
"Can they pick us up?"
"Not likely. We're dead as a stone, right beside a massive asteroid. Our stealth systems are up, and in this soup, even the best sensors will have a hard time..."
Cog wheels started turning in Karl's head. After their last unfortunate meeting with a ship they could need some cash influx. If they could sell the crew and the ship's parts...
"Their course?"
"If they're holding up they'll almost fly directly into our teeth."
A predatory grin cracked up his face.
"prepare the crew. And bring us in a position to strike them when they're near. And be careful. Don't want to be detected."
***
So far, this trip has been dreadfully boring. Captain Björn Halstrom observed the system before him as they entered the system. In recent times, the Empire had been sending out science ships to broaden their knowledge of known space. And so it came that the interest of the scientific research vessel Truth Revealed's crew was raised in this system. It was certainly an unusual sight, and might be interesting to the Empire.
<<Sir, could you take a thought at the sensor readings?>> his sensor tech 'vised him. <<There's a unusual datum there.>>
He looked at it for some time, and it almost, almost looked like there might've been a ship.
<<A ship? Here?>>
<<Stranger things've happened, sir.>>
<<And you can't get a closer look?>>
<<I tried sir, but all I could make out were asteroids.>>
<<Could be a sensor ghost. In here it wouldn't surprise me...>>
***
After they spent the last hours moving into the system at a measly 300 gravities, they were relaxed again. The sensor ghost hasn't appeared again, and they were busy taking in the reports from their scientific sensors and experiments.
Unbeknownst to them, the small pirate ship, currently trying it's best to imitate a slowly moving asteroid, finally accieved their position. To be fair, in any normal system, the [Truth Revealed[/i] would have seen through the disguise of the pirate ship from the beginning. But even the best sensors of the galaxy suffered severe degradation in this unusual system. And so the first sign of the ship they conciously received was the energy spike as it pumped up its lasers and opened fire.
Even at their faster-than-light reaction speeds they still relied on normal machines and devices. And so the normal and gravitic shield generators were just powering up as the crew realized they were under fire (But even fully erected they wouldn't have saved the vessel. It was a science vessel after all, not a warship).
Laser hit hull unopposed and burnt through the hull like the proverbial knife through hot butter. Alarms went off in the minds of the crew as systems started failing. The drive shut down after a shot destroyed one of the major drive nodes and went into emergency shut down. The crew suffered from a serious shock as the Datanet connection to Gladsheim Prime faltered after the primary, secondary and tertiary com arrays went down and lost their connection to the main Datanet. Luckily the fourth backup system was able to re-establish a connection.
Admiralty was informed, but it was decided that any help sent would come to late.
After several minutes they spent drifting through space, a message arrived.
"Surrender your ship. You're ours now."
***
Karl and his group of thugs watched as the shuttle closed in on the vessel. It was smaller than his ship, merely 90 meters in length, and its silvery hull seemed to fluctuate in some spots.
"I never seen anything like it..." he said.
"Computer says it's probably a ship of the 'Gladsheim Grand Empire'. Have heard something about them. Highly elusive. A rare thing to see one of their ships."
So their tech might be worth more than just a normal ship...
Their docking clamp latched on to the hull and burnt its way through the hull. To his surprise this hull was proving to be more resilient than expected, but after 20 minutes they were through.
Rushing through it, they emerged in a pleasantly lighted corridor, no one to be seen.
Covering each other, they advanced through the ship. Surprised again, he found out that there were no opening mechanisms for the doors and they had to pry them open manually, which was a tedious process. They went through what appeared to be some crew quarters, living rooms, a terribly strange engine room of sorts. No living person to be seen.
He was getting anxious.
"Where are they?" He was used to resistance, fights, at least some sign of crew. This wasn't what he expected, and he hated to be surprised. Surprises had a nasty tendency to bite him in the ass.
And sure as hell, he was surprised. As they opened the next door, he was greeted by the sight of 10 people standing relaxed in a room. As he assessed them, they'd reap in a huge lump of cash as sex slaves on some worlds...
Besides some couches and a floating hologram, the room was empty, though.
Leveling their guns at them, he barked, "Who's in control of this ship?"
A tall man, looking disgustingly clean and perfect stepped forward.
"I am." He didn't seem to frightened at all.
"This is my ship now, understand?"
"I am sorry, but we do not recognize your ownership of our vessel."
I'm actually hearing this?
"Shut up!" He barked. HE lunged forward and hit the guy in the head with the butt of his rifle.Blood dripped fromt he wound in the man's forehead. He didn't even flinch.
"That you have to resort to violence... Pitiful..." If a voice could hold more arrogance and disgust in it, he hasn't yet heard it. To his fascinated surprise, the bleding immediately stopped and, if he wasn't mad already, the wound started closing.
What the fuck is wrong here?
"I call the shots here, ok?" He cocked his head. "Where're the controls?"
"There are no controls," the guy flatly stated.
"There must be. Show me, or I'll kill you, and your friends there, one by one."
"There are no controls for you to use. Even if you killed me, which you can't by the way, it still wouldn't get you some controls. This ship is far too valuable to simply hand it over."
He felt his anger rise. His face turned beet-red and the vein on his temple started thumping fast.
"So you're fucking Empire is worth more to you than your life?"
"Yes," was the answer without hestitation. "THe Grand Empire is Father, the Grand Empire is Mother. It must be protected at all costs."
"I can give you that, you asshole!"
Captain Björn Halstrom's head vanished into a cloud of blood and gore and his body slumped to the ground.
Karl laughed. But his laugh died in his throat as he didn't see any reaction in the faces of the rest of the crew. None. BEsides, possibly, a slight disgust at the blood, like someone annoyed at the cherry juice spoiling their carpet.
"Now that you have proven absolutely nothing, I think it is time to end this get-together," the voice of the man lying dead before him spoke from everywhere, and nowhere.
"You're dead!"
"Only my physical interaction device. My body. But this is above your intelectual capabilites. Goodbye."
Several things happened at once.
Scuttling charges were primed. The primary power core and the anxillary reactors started an overload sequence.
The latest mind-state updates of the crew were sent through Datanet.
The main computer cores wiped themselves clean afterwards and were quantum-scrambled, then special scutttling charges vaporized them, just to be sure. Their molycirc backup systems did likewise.
Then the scuttling charges detonated, and microseconds later, the reactors blew.
The pirate ship, unlucky enough to be fooled into coming close to the former science vessel, couldn't react in time. It was engulfed into the wall of pure destruction coming for it.
All that remained was a rapidly expanding cloud of plasma and radiation. Nothing special really, in that particular system.
Gladsheim Prime
<<A pity really,>> Admiral Farshaw dryly observed. <<The data seemd useful to the point. We should do some additional research on sensors. Maybe we cuold have saved the ship. Anyway, how's Björn?>>
<<He is seriously annoyed, Admiral,>> his Chief of Staff answered. <<He doesn't like to have to wait for his body to come out of re-grow.HAve sent him on some leave.>>
<<I imagine... >>
<<Losing ships to pirates... Shameful, really. Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a squadron ready in the area, though? For pirate killing?>>
<<I will think about it. We could get a destroyer or cruiser squadron for duty in that region... Now, to the Al-Quadim system...>>
Al-Quadim system
"My government will certainly be pleased to hear it. I think our nations will be able to profit quite a bit here." She smiled.
"About the maneuvres... I was thinking of a two part approach. At first we would conduct maneuvres against our fleets, to get to know each others capabilities. In the next phase, we could put together joint units, to test how good we can work together, as a team. What do you say, Admiral Stone? Would tomorrow afternoon, Gladsheim time, be a reasonable time for you?"
