Can pr0n sites bill you without knowing?

Post by Gandalf »

Essentially as the title said.

My Dad's girlfriend's children have apparently run up a huge phone bill. Everyone there is blaming other people in the house for visiting porn sites and running up the bill. No-one will own up, but it got me worried/curious.

So, can I be billed without knowing?

A dialer is the program utility that certain paysites want you to use and download. Basically it depends on your ISP being a dial-up. You download the dialer, click ok, then it dials the number and thus huge phone bill. When I was young and didn't know any better I did the mistake of using one.

Well, to the best of my knowledge I don't have a dialler.

Basically because I download nothing.

Dialers are evil incarnate. They put the 'shit' in 'scat'.

...

Christ, I have to come up with better metaphors...

If you don't download anything then don't worry. Dialers are a program, rather than, say, an image file or movie.

Maybe someone in your family (dad) has one and you're inadvertently using it without knowing?

I needn't worry, we live seperately. My computer here shouldn't have anything on it I don't know about.

have you checked for spyware lately? some malicious sites could use dialer/browser hijackers and put them on your system relatively easily without your knowledge.

It's on the phone bill? Are you sure they aren't just calling pay porn numbers on the phone?

The dialer is doing it on it's own while you are not there. They're programmed to do this.

Pull the modem from the system until you find the offending program; most likely its running from your startup folder or somewhere's else.

Psst! You know you can update it...right? Adaware can pick up things Spybot can't, and vice versa.

I ran an update every week on Adaware, even with the latest updates Adaware failed to even detect that there was a problem. Spybot had it wiped out in no time. I've since changed to Mozilla and don't pick up half the shit i used to.

Ad aware works perfectly here, unlike spybot which for some reason crashs the system.

Anyway, it finds everything I noticed, and what I don't notice I don't care, since the cookies get deleated every week, saving me the bother.
