Jesus fucking Christ.

How can "not believing" be so harmful? I had an idiot Baptist tell me that being an atheist is as extreme as being a devout Baptist.

For seven years I've pursued digital animation as my life's dream, but ever since coming here and getting involved and getting a clearer picture of what's happening around me, I've been more and more compelled to throw my hands up and say, "It's time for someone to stop this crap." I don't really want to do it, though. As much as I don't want things to go the way they are, I don't want power either. I just want to live my life without idiots ruining things for me and my family and friends. I'm not a fan of lying, either, and I think it's high-time for a politician who tells it like it is.

But does anyone else here feel the same way? Does anyone else here feel such outrage that it's time to get involved directly?
I plan to. but 19 is a little young for congressmen. .

For a start, several states in the USA make it illegal for an Atheist to run.

IIRC, those states make it illegal for atheists to hold appointed offices, not run for elected office. At any rate, I'd love to see someone try to enforce such a law--the Constitution is VERY clear on the subject of requiring public officials, elected or appointed, on any level, to pass any sort of religious test as a requirement to hold their offices. And just in case anybody didn't get the message, Torasco v. Watkins explicitly struck down laws requiring public office holders to profess belief in God.

The barriers athiests face in running for office are born of public predjudice, not the law. Even without taking the First Amendment into account, the Framers were very careful to ensure no American is barred from seeking office based on religion.

Well, I'm currently going to a University, and I'm beginning to give some thought to switching my major from animation to poli sci. And my point is that the world needs a politician who doesn't lie
A politican who doesn't lie would never get elected, because people want someone to tell them what they want to here, not the truth.

I used to work for a political part here in Belfast and had been toying with the idea of standing for council in the future, However working in the shit house know as Stormont really opened my eyes. I wanted to work in politics to make a difference, i wanted to help people in my area who need help. Instead i just saw a shower of shite sit in the Assembly disagreeing with each other just because the point was prought up by an opposing party.

Also i'd never get elected. My family are too involved in paramilitaries and honest men never get elected.

With my personality, the only time I'll ever hold a political office will be after a bloody revolution, not an election. :P

I’m increasingly of the opinion that the electorate must actually like hypocritical, corrupt, lying, scumbags it’s the simplest explanation to explain who have in power.

Let me ask you guys this: I think, by now, that my political views on a wide range of areas have been clearly expressed on this website. I agree with many of you on a LOT of issues, and I disagree with you on a LOT of issues. You guys have been exposed to a lot more material than I could hope to present in any campaign to the public. With all that information about me, how many of you would vote for me over Jack T. Democrat, Bill C. Republican, and a typical spread of other "third party" candidates?

I think you may have lost a few votes when you said you'd kill a stranger for a few hundred thousand dollars, you lost mine when you declared your support for blast-doors over force fields though, there are some issues I refuse to compromise on

Not exactly public office, but I'm seriously considering applying to the FBI after about a year or so of public accounting work. I think I'd have a decent shot of getting in, too.

Me running for office is one of the possible career plans I have... but I still need something to do before that.

When/if I'd run, I was thinking shooting for the Senate, but I'd be better off aiming for the House.

I'd just hate the public scrutiny too much. If you did go and buck the trend, you can almost bet the two parties are going to do what they can to unseat you. And if that means bringing up some weird shit you did when you were young and didn't know better, or just because you goofed around on a web board, I'm pretty sure they would do everything they could to use that, take it out of context, put the worst possible spin on it, and mudsling away.

I do not want that to happen to me, nor would I (assuming I had one at that point, which I'm fairly sure I will) want to put my family through that, and have what they do become national news as well!

Sorry, it's just not something I ever see myself doing when I doubt I'd ever have a chance of making any difference anyway (one man against what? 434 other Representitives? 99 other Senators?). I know it won't be quite that bad, but the principle is mostly the same, IMO.

Besides which, I want to serve in the military, and make that my career. Obviously, I couldn't serve in politics until well after that anyway, and that would run into the who family problem, plus anything even remotely questionable I may've done in my career to try and get me out and the usual political stuff.
