Well, you made your cue, at least. At any rate, your claims of the US 'leading the pack' and 'no real countries having it' are soundly thrashed.

according to this gay-rights site only The Netherlands, Belgium, The US State of Massachusetts and the Canadian Provinces of Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec allow gay marriage.

Puts fingers on the 'pulse' of the nation. Hmmm, lets see, new Medicare advertisements on TV, Liberals shoring up their conservative support, and Labour doing jack all to ruffle feathers.

Yep, it's an election year!

If you sum up all the countries of the list above, you have somethink like 300 million inhabitants, more than the US and Australia put together and about half of the 1st world population. It must make you feel very proud to know that your country is more advanced than most of the world 3rd nations.

Whilst we aren't that bad the point is that we should be a lot better. I can't speak for America, but Australia should be leading the world on this issue. Coming from one of the first places on Earth to grant women the right to vote I expect better from this country, and I find our swing towards conservative values of recent times very disturbing.

Yes, as has been stated in this thread, only those places have full marriage, the others have civil unions. Reading the thread would be useful.

so then part of the United States is one of only a handfull of places on the ENTIRE PLANET where gay couples can be legally married. Sounds like we're pretty fucking progressive to me.

And what's that? Your duly elected leader is leading a hard ride against it? Multiple states are passing laws or trying to against it? Wow, how progressive you must feel!

Someone doesnt follow politics closely :D

This type of legislation was anounced several weeks to a month ago and Labor signalled its support when it was in the house of reps.

Its only that its gotten to the senate that people have actually noticed, and that Howard publicly announced it instead of just slipping it by probably helped.

And when the PM announces the passage of a Bill, it generally means its an important one. Why the hell Howard made it important by announcing it I dont know.

yes it's something that DEFINED AS BEING NOT A MARRAIGE, that unifies to people of the same gender. Civil Unions are/have been performed in the US states of Hawaii, Vermont, New York and California.

Progressive compared to whom? Zimbabwe? Naturally.

You said the US was leading the pack on this issue. That's not true compared to the countries that matter (hint: 1st world, western, etc), not to mention your comment about insignificant, 16 million of population countries. Stop backpedalling.

irellevant. It is legal. Richard Nixon was against being impeached, but he still legally was.

In one state. WOW! How progressive you are! Entire other NATIONS have done it, but don't worry folks, one whole state has done it in the US. And five if we count Unions! Wowie!

And don't forget, folks, the US is more progressive than the 3rd world! Yessiree, I sure am impressed!

Now, little retard boy, here's a hint: What's one of the big phrases I haven't written in this thread but which you keep reacting to?

Oh yes. The phrase I have not written is 'The US is a neanderthalic fundie refuge point'. You merely invent this strawman because your original claism have been shown to be the utter bullcrap they are.

Like I said, the laws are in the process of changing there with a lot less fundie opposition, for the simple reason we don't have nearly as much of them as the US. Also, our president (divorced and remarried) and prime minister are both openly atheists.

That makes Portugal ahead of the US in this matter, although not as much as the other countries where marriage is already allowed. Certainly, not behind, like your first post implied.

You're so cute when you backpedal and fling mud.

Your claims that no where of merit allowed it are: BULLCRAP. Two whole nations do, with populations well above that of Massachusetts, last I checked. Your claims of the US being at the front of this are: BULLCRAP! It's about ten years behind.

I love how you immediately try to paint me as going from the WV citizens. Wanna know what the general sentiment from around here has been? 'Your damn business, just no ass-sex in public.' I love WeeVee; people just don't give a shit as long as you aren't getting up in their face.

No, Crackpot, what I'm going from is news reports from around these fifty states. But that would ruin your preconceived notions, so you attack like a rabid little monkey.

So, you're conceding that the US is not boldly leading the world into a bright new future of freedom of choice, but following the other 1st world nations and hoping not to trip because the POTUS and I believe the majority of its population are christian fundamentalists who want to change the Constitution. Gotcha.
