A major exercise soon to be underway will have a large part of the Navy fleet deploying out of Norfolk.

WAVY News 10 has learned the Navy is sending seven carrier strike groups out to sea.

The exercise is designed to test the Navy's new rapid deployment readiness.

Several Norfolk-based carrier strike groups will participate. The USS George Washington is already deployed. Two others, the USS Enterprise and USS Harry S Truman will leave soon.

Other carriers involved in the exercise include the USS John F. Kennedy, the USS John S. Stennis, and the USS Ronald Reagan - which left Norfolk on Thursday.

While the Navy won't say where the seven carrier groups are going, the carriers not already deployed are expected to be gone for only one to two months.

Major portino of the Royal Navy is also going to sea for aforementioned

Do they conduct war games with that many carriers?

Not ususlly, but of course war games can be as big as they want them to be (as far as finances, deployment commitments and logistics allow, that is) this is indeed one of the largest wargames I've heard about, however.

But why would the Ronald Regan be involved? Isn't she brand new and running with the bare minimum of ordinance (IIRC they don't even have a full fighter compliment yet)?

Hint: No carrier has a "full" fighter compliment.

I highly doubt this is going to be some new, major war. For one thing the last thing Bush needs right now is another war, much less one with no warning or debate. My guess is it's a show of force directed in the direction of Iraq if anything.

Dunno, maybe they want to give her a good shakedown cruise?

Shep, the Stennis left last monday for a regular deployment. I even saw it transit.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
