Sincerely, Imperial commanders are more the warlord kind. They get what they want by force when they can and that's all.
If I could add to that.

Example: I believe it was the Star Wars Tech manual were I read something about Commander Tarkin (later Grand Moff) landed his ship on a platform where protestors were currently protesting about the taxes.

Result? millions dead, revolt crushed and one dirty imperial starship.

How is that for negotiations!

Kirk opens channels and starts singing "Rocketman" followed by "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

Kirk wins easily. How?

He shows Thrawn reruns of T.J. Hooker to lull him into a false sense of security. Not only does Thrawn not take middle-aged L.A. cops armed with revolvers seriously, he is completely distracted by the then early twentysomething Heather Locklear! Of course Locklear will be wearing her police-issue uniform with miniskirt or her stripper/ hooker outfits she uses for "undercover" work -and to get ratings.

Not only is Kirk able to catch Thrawn's ship with its shields down, but Thrawn is caught literally with his pants down and with only one hand free!

If that fails, Kirk could hide a length of piano wire under his rug and garrote Thrawn.

Or trick Thrawn into watching The White Comanche. Thrawn's attempt to discern anything about the "art" of that movie will fuck him up worse than the Nomad Device.

Or go mega-nuclear by singing.

Face it, Thrawn is WAY overmatched.

Imps were too large to go atmospheric...I belive the Vics could, from what I remember of the WEG Imp Sourcebook.

The Vics even had a sub-class that was designed to do this...get in low to a planet and pound.

Vics can certainly go atmospheric, but this is the first I've heard of one landing.

Thrawn was a bit nutty, thinking he could tell how to defeat a species in battle simply by looking at some holographic art of their's.*

But then, he got the job done, so whatever he does it works.

*Or he pretends to think this, to fool the gullible, like Palleon. ; )

Op, forgot the other part of what I was saying...

.... and Kirk is famous for exploiting the nutty weaknesses of his enemies! (then again, throw a bunch of babes at Kirk and he'll be distracted easily) ; )

The original Victory class Star Destroyers could enter atmosphere however this capability was removed in the Victory II class.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Source? I'm curious as to why that ability would be removed.

Another question, why does the Vic II still have it's atmospheric flaps if the ability for planetary flight was removed?

Because they're too big to simply be atmospheric flaps, since most of the time this ship is in space?

Yep.

What's bugging me is that they take up space that could be used for many other things and they're not necessary if the Vic IIs aren't atmospheric capable.
