I fail to see how ignoring the humanitarian purposes we supposedly went in under is a good idea. I'm all for being as tough on the militants as possible but the simple fact is that it's not our country and if we're going to be liberating them we might want to keep that in mind. I agree with the article that we might need to come down harder on the militants. But that needs to be done in a militarilty appropriate context, not just as a way of punishing the Iraqi people because it's not going well.But America's attention has been diverted to rebuilding Iraqi hospitals, schools, roads and sewers, and on currying favor with the locals (some U.S. soldiers were ordered to grow moustaches in token of their respect for Iraqi culture.)
Oh yeah, because getting trigger happy around the local population worked so well in Veitnam. I think avoiding killing the innocent citizens of the country we came to liberate is a smart idea.Soldiers have strict orders to avoid the risk of killing civilians—many of whom aid or are themselves militants—even at the cost of imperiling their own lives.
But what do I know, I'm just a decent human being.
Figures that such a crackpot article would come from an Ayn Rand cultist. If what Dubya & Co. are doing in Iraq is too "compassionate", what would cruelty look like? Zyklon-B cannisters? Mass hangings?
The construction projects are mainly to practice a kind of hare-brained Republican socialism where Halliburton and other welfare queens get to suck the Treasury's teat dry -not out of the kindness of Dubya's heart. There is a windowdressing component to building schools and such, and this might have won over a few Iraqis.
The reason Iraqis want Uncle Sam out of their country is not because too few atrocities have been committed. Killing more Iraqis will not win them over, particularly the dead ones. Just as serial liars have to cover one lie with another, and another, and another... Brutal invaders and occupiers have to keep resorting to one brute tactic after another, one atrocity after another to keep their victims from getting too uppity.
