They obviously don't like hearing the truth about Tiananmen Square, or letting anybody speak the truth about Tiananmen Square while in their borders (for those who are too lazy to read the article, he was taken away because he spoke out on Tiananmen Square, not because of last year's SARS whistle-blowing).

Repressive governments generally don't like people who speak out.

Oceania of Asia, sorry, I mean China, is not a place you can voice disdain against the gov't and not expect repercussions. If you're to run a nation of mindless automatons, you can't have them conceiving individuality like this. I think it doesn't help that the Chinese are really looking to compete with the West so they've got to do all they can to not appear weak or incompetent. All for the sake of appearances obviously.

If the handling of the SARS case doesn't reek of incompetence, I don't know what does. Mistreating students with the use of tanks is one thing. But being inept with something that could kill a sizeable chunk of the rest of the world won't win fans on the international stage.
