Thrawn cloaks pieces of his own design and sneaks them onto the board.

If Thrawn has time to learn the rules first, 50% in the first few games of either victory

I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.
It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

No, Thrawn wins first game, draw second, Spock wins every game thereafter. I think that was his style that I read about in one of the books.Solauren wrote:If Thrawn has time to learn the rules first, 50% in the first few games of either victory

I'll go through this twice, with two different assumptions:
1) Assumption: Thrawn had a chance to read the rules.
First game, they tie or Spock wins. Second game, Thrawn has studied Spock's strategies, and smushes him. He continues smushing him every time thereafter.
2) Assumption: Thrawn got to look around Spock's quarters before the game, and got to study the paintings there.
First game, Thrawn absolutely crushes Spock. Each game, he beats spock worse and worse.
Ye I quite agree... On the other hand, chess is still limited... thrawn always surpises his enemies because he a)knew what they'd do and b)always knew how to suprise them... well in chess, many things are predictable and he's limited in what to do... more limited than in most space battles i'd say.-
As long there is gravity, ride on...

How familiar is Spock with 2D modern chess? I only ever see him play 3D chess. And do all of the pieces move the same way or are there totally different rules?

He'll be more familiar with it than thrawn anyway.
I think the peices move the same way when not moving up and down, although I'm not sure. I could just be imagining things.

I think you forgot one major thing, what are they playing for?
If they are playing for keeps then I would think each would play to their extent.
Besides Spock wins in two games

It will take them time to learn despite how much all of you wank to them; rules are the first of many games. I would crush them for at least ten games even if their learning curve is exponential, but Spock with the sight knowledge he has would win. That is unless someone can use spatial intelligence on an enormous scale then they could math to coordinate the pieces.

I think thrawn will just sit there waiting for his pieces to get up, walk over and attack Spock's pieces.

Spock's good, but he doesn't have anything remotely resembling the strategic genius of Thrawn. Because he'd have more experience, he might be able to beat Thrawn once with a healthy dose of luck. After that, he stands no chance. Thrawn may lack experience at chess, but he's got more experience with strategic warfare than Spock can hope to compete with.

Have you ever played chess? Do you know that it requires more than magical genius to play it well?

Is there any evidence that Spock has ever played 2D chess at all?

Of course I've played chess, a great many times. It also requires a firm grasp of trategy, which Thrawn has, a good mind for tactics, which Thrawn also has, and experience. I'll concede that Thrawn doesn't have experience playing chess, but, then again, we've only ever seen Spock play 3d chess. Impossible to tell whether or not he's played the version in question. Besides which, it's safe to assume Thrawn has probably played some sort of similiar game (like the one seen in ANH, for instance) so it wouldn't be a totally foreign thing to him.

For those interested in studying/glancing at the differences between modern 2d FIDE chess, which I guess you all know, and Star Trek chess: look no further
Damn, no edit button in vs... will I ever learn?
Anyway: Thrawn is probably at a much greater disadvantage then Spock, so although Spock's "infallability" sligthly eclipses that of Data, 'nuf said there, he would win the first few to several games.
Thrawn, though not infallable, seems to be a very quick (though unconventional) study, so if given a few days time between games would in my estimation soon be beating Spock at his own game, as it where, especially since it is not Spock's game to begin with.
