Looks like it'll block a lot of traffic. Could they at least march the body through one of DC's expansive parks?

Are you kidding? This is the most awesome Presidential corpse tour since Lincoln! Woo!
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! Wasn't Augustus the first Roman Emperor? Maybe Hemlock wasn't being disrespectful.

Yeah, what the fuck? I though Hemlockgrey was making a favourable comparison between Reagan and an ancient Emperor. How the fuck is that disrespectful?

And fucking hell, someone above asked if this was America's 'Princess Di' funeral. You telling me that's LESS offensive, Col. Crackpot?

Most Americans dont like to be compared to the Roman Empire in any way whatsoever even if its a fairly benevolent comparison.
Doing so will result in a knee-jerk reaction from the more rabid ones.

Augustus was ruthless in taking the throne. But he was also a damn fine Emperor (although he had help).
Rome annexed Egypt and everything up to the Danube river and subdued Spain and Gaul.
The Roman Empire adored him.

Calling me a "point of sale" is not terribly clever. No wonder you defend Von Reagan! Of course, defending his disgusting behavior at Bitburg is a tall order. Reagan didn't just lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Stormtrooper, he claimed that the Nazis buried at Bitburg were victims just like those who were killed in the Nazi camps.

Incidentally, my comment was not intended to be either respectful or disrespectful. It was a simple observation; Reagan appears to have been deified by the majority of conservatives (whether he deserves it or not, I'm not commenting on) and I think comparing him to Augustus, at least, in terms of his impact on the country, is a bit more apt than comparing him to Princess Diana.

However, I honestly have no idea what the hell Crackpot means by "making little swipes at the man," as I don't think I even posted in any of the Reagan threads.

You tend to spout off these little one-line "rebuttals" to claims which contradict your views quite often; I noticed you did it in the thread about Reagan and Central America too. Do you any explanation for WHY Reagan laid a wreath on the grave of a Waffen SS trooper (I'm not familiar with the incident in question)?

I noticed that elfdarts little quip you ignored.. but whatever.. Here is the condensed version. You can read the whole thing if you want..
But Reagan would not budge, and neither would Kohl. "I will not give up the idea," said the West German leader in an interview with Time's Bonn bureau chief. "If we don't go to Bitburg, if we don't do what we jointly planned, we will deeply offend the feelings of [my] people." A poll revealed that 72% of West Germans thought the visit should go forward as planned. Kohl admitted that rarely had German-American relations been so strained. Indeed, it seemed that in the days leading up to the presidential visit, the White House and the Chancellery were pitted one against the other in the blame game. A top Reagan aide claimed the Germans had given assurances that nothing in the Bitburg visit would be an "embarrassment" for the president. "As clumsily as we handled it," said another U.S. official, "Kohl &. Co. have surpassed us in spades." A German official responded: "The Americans also have a responsibility toward the president. They must also check on the history that is beneath the ground. It was not very intelligent."

Reagan didn't help matters when he announced that he saw nothing wrong with visiting the cemetery because the German soldiers buried there were "victims of Nazism also . . . drafted into service to carry out the hateful wishes of the Nazis."

My issue with the Bitburg comment was where it was placed.. He was intentionaly being a prick[/quote]

His quip was accompanied by something which actually resembled an argument.
