I and I expect most of America would hate five dollar coins, coins are too easy to lose.

Five dollar coins would be in circulation for maybe a week, they'd be snatched up by collectors before most people could even see one.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.
It's not so much the fact that coins can be lost as to size, I've seen more times then I can count that people try to hand over Saccys or Susies as quarters because they go from the size in their pockets. If they brought back the old Eisenhower coins it would be moderatley accepted, except by vending machine makers.Sea Skimmer wrote:I and I expect most of America would hate five dollar coins, coins are too easy to lose.

Split since this has little to do with the original topic.

We have 1 and 2 dollar coins up here in Canada. I hated the idea at first, but they kind of grow on you. I barely ever lose them, and because of the size, weight and colour differences they don't get confused with other coins. There was talk of five dollar coins a little while ago, but the idea seems to have dried up.

Japan has 500 yen coin and they're annoying as hell to keep an eye on. I prefer bills.

Convenient for vending mechines though, and much easier to carry around than a sack of 100's. Though then again, most vending machines thesedays take the 1000's as well at the very least.HemlockGrey wrote:Japan has 500 yen coin and they're annoying as hell to keep an eye on. I prefer bills.

One dollar coins would probably work well in the US if we got rid of the one dollar bill. That of course will never happen because the union that produces currency paper is so powerful that congress would never approve such a move even though from a cost analysist it would be the responsible thing to do.Cpl Kendall wrote:We have 1 and 2 dollar coins up here in Canada. Scotland still has the £1 note and they still accept it in England etc. though the coins are far more common and more useful. £2 coins are becoming more common, but any £5 coins are collectors items and can't be used as legal tender as such. I recall a kid's show on about how to get the best deals in shops etc. had a letter in from one girl who couldn't spend her collectors edition £5 coin.

We use a $1 coin. The $1 note went out of circulation a long time ago. I suspect this is because fat old ladies like their purses stuffed with valuable metal rather than pieces of paper with a dead president's face on it.

Bills advantage:it doesn't weight as much as coins.
Bills disadvantage:with the counterfeit scare every stores have a UV gadget to see if its a real or fake one.
the worste annoying time that happen is when i came directly from the bank, with all the security measure they added on them to make counterfeiting impossible, they still look to see if its a real one.

Main problem with low denomination bills are that they get destroyed pretty quickly - so it costs more than coins to make.Montcalm wrote:Bills advantage:it doesn't weight as much as coins.

I don't mind loonies and toonies - but really don't want anything bigger since I've got enough change at home to kill any intruder. (If I ever get surprised by an intruder at home, I'll chuck my pail of change at them - kiss them goodbye )
