Removing Someone From Hate Mail

I received this e-mail request today:

You can find Ryan's original opinion of my website on my Hate Mail page.

So, should I be a big man, compassionate upstanding web citizen, and grant this request?

Or, should I remain.....Wayne Poe?

I've "anonymized" a user before at his request. I think I might have another request somewhere in my inbox for a similar anonymization, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

I think Mike's anonymity idea is a good one. It preserves the arguement (just so you can still say, I've already dealt with this), but protects ther person. Or you could post they guy's email and say, quite clearly that he regrets his actions back then.

Or you could do both.

I'd kill it completely. I very much doubt he and I are the only people on this planet who did stupid things that they regret. There is a time to say "Hey, you said it, that's life, live with it", but I don't think this is one of those times.

Everybody makes stupid arguments sometimes or another. So I say anonymize the email. That would preserve the argument while protecting the creator.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Anonymize it, though you could put a note in that the author apologized.

I find myself forced to agree to anonymizing the exchange, if you truly believe the person is sincere.
There are two kinds of people in the world: the kind who think it’s perfectly reasonable to strip-search a 13-year-old girl suspected of bringing ibuprofen to school, and the kind who think those people should be kept as far away from children as possible … Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between drug warriors and child molesters.” - Jacob Sullum

Anonymizing it is the best solution.

Meh, remove it. if the exchange really was years ago, and he asks, you might as well. honestly, what purpose does it serve to leave it there? We may get a chuckle, but everyone who matters has already read through it. People do change. I, myself was once a silly, headstrong idiot. I'm no longer headstrong.

I'd remove it if he requests you to. He's been polite about it .. it's the honourable thing to do. ;)

I think doing as he requested is the best option. We've all said stupid things in the past. Even myself, stunning example of human perfection I may be. ;)

So, does that leave you as just a silly idiot?

I also cast my vote for the anonymity option.

Ok everyone, after considerable thought (yeah, right!) I've anon-ed the guy.

If your going to use anonymity- make sure you include the email to explain why.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

rbirkel02@hotmail.com was in my contacts list.

But I have no clue who it is!

This is getting strange.

Wow. I figured out who it is.
Surprising

He was a nice guy, at least to me, when we were in a Star Wars RPG together a while back on another board. Didn't seem to have any anti star wars bias.

I'd say give him the anonymity.

Well, apparently he wishes he'd never wrote it, he's not anti-warsie and has no clue why he wrote it...he does remember writing it a long time ago though.

I'd take his email/name out of it. He doesn't seem like a 'rabid trekkie'.

I say go for anonymity. It lets him not look like an ass and it keeps the argument on record.
