Fifty Reasons...

Post by Vendetta »

Inspired by the recent Hotdog's "50 Reasons we still love movies", I am compelled to ask:

What are the reasons, despite Jar-Jar, despite the Ewoks, despite Jake Lloyd, and despite Kevin J Motherfucker, what are the reasons you still love Star Wars. There don't have to be 50 of them, you could have one, three, or a hundred, they don't have to be provable, substantial, or relevant beyond your own headspace, but I know you have them. Post them, and for the rest of us, offer a brief explanation why they mean the galaxy far, far away to you.

And by way of example, I start the bidding with:

1. James Earl Jones

It doesn't matter how much abuse Darth Vader suffers, make him a whiny teenager or precocious brat, and we all remember the real Darth, and we do that because of James Earl Jones. He dominates every scene he's in, despite never being on set, the whole soundtrack gives way to the tones you can never fail to associate with anything other than the Dark Lord. Three years before there was an Emperor, James Earl Jones made you need new underwear, because he redefined badass.

The OT.
It takes a lot more than two measly prequels (which actually aren't all that bad if you ignore the actual story :P ) to destroy the magic of those movies.
Assuming it CAN be destroyed.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

The one that neatly leads into the OT? That story? :P

Things that keep me going:

The designs. PT, OT, military & civilian. It´s all good.

John Williams

I can't think of a single score from him that wasn't amazing.

1) Darth Vader: Greatest Badass of all time

Not Anakin Skywalker, the real deal, the mean motherfucker in black. The Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader.

2) Han Solo

He's a world class smart ass and my favorite hero from the Original Trilogy. Classic pirate-scoundrel with a heart of (and for) gold.

3) Space battles.

Let's face it, this is Star Wars and they've delivered some damn good battles over the years. I mean Geonosis was damn good and even TPM had a decent battle. But the best one still has to be Endor and Yavin. That's Star Wars for you!

4) Jedi in their prime

Forget all the crap, seeing the likes of Yoda, Mace and Obi-wan in action is still damn cool. AotC was worth it entirely just to see Yoda throwing it down with Dooku.

5) The Orginal Trilogy still kicks ass

Let us not forget, the Original Trilogy still kicks ass.

All previous reasons

+ the fact a human empire (instead of some wank alien race) controls the galaxy. And evil or not, the Empire is cool (the uniforms, the shipdesigns, imperial march, ...). Not like those puny rebels with their buttugly capital ships (altough their fighters are nice)

+ they kick the shit out of most (all?) other sci-fi gigs that been on tv/cinema

Vader - He's a man of few words, all black, all badass. Can't wait to see him Episode III.

I have the same complaints about the last two movies as everyone else, regardless - the last two movies were visually stunning and they had excellent music.

What's going to destroy the Old Trilogy is George Lucas, who will get sick of the whole thing create a newly edited Super Duper Special Edition (with their own movie releases) where Alderaan shoots first at the Death Star... and misses. Jar-Jar will then look up from the firing controls and go "Weesa gonna die?"

Anyway...
-Classic story. The plot isn't original, but the Old Trilogy was a great retelling.

-Darth Vader. The blackest brutha of them all.

-Revolutionary scenery. All the aliens, all the locales. That's how StarTrek's Federation should look, rather than have all their aliens walking around with latex butt-cracks glued to their heads.

Definitely the OT. If the PT and the EU vanished tomorrow, I wouldn't shed a tear, but the OT--the REAL OT, not Lucas's bastardized Special Editons--is classic American cinema.

The OT.. minus Ewoks. I have no beef with the SE besides Greedo. TPM is nice visually, but it's mostly blah. AOTC is nice however.

But "Old" Trilogy? It's "Original" Trilogy.

Well, I don't hate the Ewoks, don't care about who shot first in ANH but Jake Lloyd who played Anakin Mannequin in TPM was perhaps not the best choice. Mind you, it's difficult finding good child actors.
When it comes to things in the PT I bet my two cents (or two Swedish kronor) on Ian McDiarmid, the most talented actor in the PT. He saved TPM and made valuable contributions to AOTC. I can't wait to see him in Episode III.
When it comes to the OT, I will have to think until tomorrow...
