MIAMI (AP) A plane passenger slapped a federal air marshal after refusing to sit down and ignoring instructions to end her cellular phone call, which she said would have been ``rude,'' prosecutors said Tuesday.
Lilia Belkova has been jailed since being charged with assaulting a federal officer and interfering with a flight crew last Wednesday as a US Airways flight prepared to take off from Miami to Philadelphia.
A bail hearing was set for Thursday. It was unclear late Tuesday if Belkova, 38, had yet been assigned an attorney.
According to prosecutors, Belkova refused flight attendants' instructions to turn off her cell phone as Flight 26 taxied for takeoff, saying: ``It is rude to hang up on people. I don't have to turn my phone off.''
After ignoring more flight crew instructions, one of two air marshals ordered Belkova to be seated and put a hand on her shoulder to show her where to sit.
Belkova reached back and slapped the marshal across the face, causing ``minor swelling,'' according to court papers. She was handcuffed and taken off the plane.
About time! Im actually glad she got what was coming!

Ah, a representative of the dumb side of the Russian immigrant community. I'm glad she got what was coming to her. I would have punched her lights out, too
Have a very nice day.

You can just picture her, can't you? Cell-phone, business attire, type A personality, BMW in the garage at home, the world revolves around her, etc. She probably slapped the air marshall because she had judged his income to be unworthy of respect.

What is it about Beamers that stirs up such hatred, as opposed to other luxury car brands?
I detest them as well, I just don't know why.

No, she slapped him because he was a dumb American. And, btw, here's an aricle to show her what a dumb bitch she is
Miami Passenger Accused Of Slapping Air Marshal
POSTED: 6:43 am EDT June 9, 2004
MIAMI -- A US Airways passenger slapped a federal air marshal after refusing to sit down and repeatedly ignoring orders to get off her cell phone, which she said would be "rude," federal prosecutors charged Tuesday.
A public defender was appointed to represent Lilia Belkova, who will remain in jail pending a bail hearing Thursday.
Belkova was charged with assaulting a federal officer and interfering with a flight crew after her Miami-Philadelphia flight returned to the gate last Wednesday to drop her off.
The trouble started when she refused orders to turn off her phone while Flight 26 was taxiing for takeoff, saying: "It is rude to hang up on people. I don't have to turn my phone off."
A flight attendant told her that she would need to change her seat if she couldn't follow instructions because she was sitting in an emergency exit row, which was open only to people who follow directions. She was sitting 11 rows ahead of her assigned seat.
Belkova, 38, responded that she was disabled and needed a wheelchair to reach the jet. The flight attendant said that was another reason for her to move because only people who could open the exit door were allowed to sit there.
Belkova said she could lift the 40-pound door and reached for the handle before other passengers yelled at her to stop.
The plane's first officer was notified and decided Belkova needed to get off the plane. Heading back to the gate, she stood up, walked forward and was told to sit down.
One of two air marshals on the flight told Belkova she was interfering with the crew, told her to be seated and put a hand on her shoulder to show her where to sit.
Belkova reached back and slapped the marshal across the face, causing "minor swelling," according to court papers filed by another marshal. Belkova was handcuffed and taken off the plane.

I'll bet you $20 that wheelchair was something she made up.

Maybe it's because the people driving them tend to be assholes. I've lost count of the number of times I've been cut off by some asshole in a BMW. BMWs seem to be quite trendy among a particular socio-economic group which is closely correlated with asshole driving techniques. Perhaps there's a special BMW driving school where they teach new owners how to cut people off in traffic.

I love beamers. I consider them to be the best type of luxury car out there. The reasons people hate them, IMO, is because people who drive them are very often successful business executives. Since, the haters usually make less money than them (and I've never heard a luxury car owner speak of an irrational hatred of a beamer ) they actually hate their incomes. Not to say this applies to anyone on this board, of course.

How do you explain the fact that Mercedes and Lexus do not generate the same anger? They're not exactly cheap. BMW marketed itself as the "sports luxury car", and they seem to be popular with people who like to drive aggressively but who are older, have money, and do "important" things so they feel justified in talking on their cell-phones while merging on the highway at 140 km/h.

It's probably the fact that they're marketed to a particular audience that cares more about performance than genuine luxory. This means that most people attracted to BMW's are also "thrill-seeking" upper-class individuals, as opposed to the more reserved and quiet upper-class people who flock to other luxory-car companies. In turn, the "thrill-seekers" driving BMW's drive very aggressively, whereas most others who are more concerned with more "serious" vehicular attributes drive more conservatively and don't annoy people as much.

And people say there is no justice in the world.....
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Not only what everyone else has said, but also the fact that these kinds of people are the ones who also buy their spoiled good for nothing brats Beamers so they can drive them around and flaunt their parent's wealth. It's why I can't go through the parking lot of a rich kid's private school...I tend to go into a destructive rage at seeing all the spoiled rich kids' cars driven by people who will have everything in life handed to them on a silver platter because they were born with money.
Anyway, that's why I personally hate 'em as opposed to other luxury cars.

Hey, I went to a rich kid's private school. I knew kids that had those Beamers. And I hate them with a passion that only someone who grew up like that can have. Fuck 'em.

One of the reasons I'm unusually curteous to airline flight attendants is because I know they have to put up with crap like this from others. Besides being delayed, I'd love to be on that flight watching this bitch getting cuffed and thrown off.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.
Does anyone know just how dangerous using a cellphone on a plane really is? I'd like to know what exactly is the hazard, and how likely is it that whatever this hazard is will occur.
If you use a mobile phone while on a plane, the computers will die and the plane will very suddenly crash straight into the ground. Actually, it's really not that HUGE a problem, tho it's all safety precautions so it doesn't become a problem.

I think they interfere with communications, which would probably be a Very Bad Thing methinks if something comes up midflight.

Fuck, can a Mod stick this in the above? His Submit too soon.

She reached for the door...while the plane was in motion... Granted it was still on the ground, but still. Has she never flown before?!
And fgalkin...

This you putting in your thoughts about her motivations or your opinion of the Marshal?

Where I am, Mercedes drivers are just as bad and detested as BMW drivers. Even more so, as we do have a massive shitload of Mercedes driving here, in the home town of Mercedes-Benz.

Mobile phones are active transmission devices. Have you ever put a phone anywhere near a radio for any length of time? You get that little "Biddit dup biddit dup biddit dup dup" sound every few minutes as the phone checks in to base to see if It has messages waiting for it. In a plane in flight, you fly over suburbs in seconds, so the phone has to CONSTANTLY check it's position so that the network knows where it is for inbound calls. instead of interference every few minutes, it becomes interference every few seconds....
Think of this
"Chicago Departures, Delta 423 is with you climbing 5000 through 2,800"
"Delta 423 identified climb to *biddit dup biddit dup biddit dup dup* thousand and maintain, Traffic is a 767 just passing through your *biddit dup biddit dup biddit dup* caution wake turbulence"
"Chicago, We missed most of that please repeat?"
"Delta Turn now heading *biddit dup biddit dup* and Expedite climb to *biddit dup biddit dup* due to traffic"
Ok, so that's bad enough. but when an aircraft flys a precision ILS approach, the ILS is a system which couples to the autopilot and guides the autopilot to the ground using a very directional radio beam. If, by chance, that beam is distupted by a mobile phone, the autopilot could loose track of the ILS directional beam and the aircraft may wander off course on final approach.
