All my experiences in the military tell me that this guy will get off with a fine. But fuck I hope they kick him out for it.CBC wrote:OTTAWA - A senior officer in the Canadian military has been charged with using a Defence Department computer to surf pornographic websites.
Navy Captain David Banks will face a court martial later this month.
Military police charged Banks after an investigation revealed a computer at the Defence Department headquarters in Ottawa had been used to visit porn sites.
Banks is one of the military's top financial experts.
He is in charge of the department that funds equipment purchases and calculates the cost of sending troops on foreign missions.
A military spokesperson said Banks faces possible dismissal from the forces if found guilty.

What the fuck for? Looking at PORNO? Jesus mate, discipline the guy for doing it during workhours, but don't DISMISS him.Cpl Kendall wrote:All my experiences in the military tell me that this guy will get off with a fine. But fuck I hope they kick him out for it.

I'm just sick of the officers getting away with whatever they want in the Canadian Forces, if it was an NCO, they'd throw the book at him. And they have done so in the past. I want an example made of him, so that officers will stop thinking that their above the regs.Stofsk wrote:What the fuck for? Looking at PORNO? Sure, he shouldn't be using his work computer for that kind of thing, but I'm convinced the armed forces use porn, and adultery as convenient trumped-up charges to fuck over people they don't like. There's an ulterior motive behind this, I'll wager.
Just a few weeks ago, the Pentagon tried to frame James Yee, a Navy chaplain as a spy. When charge after charge was proved to be 100% horseshit, they tried to bust him for... adultery and dirty pictures on his computer!
If that doesn't work, they'll nail him for witchcraft.

Canada has a navy?
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster
The potential for consequence's are about the same. The only difference that I've ever seen is that the punishments for NCO's are harsher than for the Officers. The NCO's typically get the whole book thrown at them. The Officers usually get a fine or a reprimand.Stofsk wrote:Bizarre. My understanding has always been that if you're an officer getting a Court Martial is 10x worse than if you're a NCO.
I agree that it is a b/s charge, but for some reason the CF takes porn very seriously. Although if their at work then they should be doing work-related stuff, not surfing for porn. But the DIN firewall should stop him from looking at it.
When I was still in the military, the intelligence section on the base had their HDD's seized three times for having porn on their PC's.

Not bad at all considering our paltry military budget. Thats the only reason why I could stomach a Conservative government. At least they'll up Military spending. Although I have no idea where they'll get the money, perhaps from the budget surplus, which IIRC was several Billion last year.

Hey, some private companies will escort you from the building and throw the pink slip after you if they catch you abusing their computers at work in such a matter. Why should a military, which represents the nation's government, be any less strict?Stofsk wrote:What the fuck for? Looking at PORNO? The RCN visits Naval Station San Diego occasionally. The largest ship I've seen is the Protectuer, the underway replinishment ship. As for the Frigates...well..in Photos them seem big, but even parked next to a FFG they seem underwhelming. Especially when they have their ragglyass Sea King still on the flight deck because they couldn't trust it to fly off and land at the NAS.

But doesn't a dishonorable discharge dick you over a lot worse than being canned from a civilian job?GrandMasterTerwynn wrote:Why should a military, which represents the nation's government, be any less strict?
Yes, yes it does. In the US military it puts an indicator on your SSN, so all an employer has to do is glance at it and go "Oh! Shitbag! Next applicant?"

I DID write 'discipline' him, it's the 'dismiss' part which I have a problem with. It's over the top and excessive, and can hurt the guy in civilian life, while simply punishing him sends the message 'stop horsing around on company time' while at the same time keeping a skilled worker. As this is the military, you're also keeping a worker who has been trained for the job.GrandMasterTerwynn wrote:Hey, some private companies will escort you from the building and throw the pink slip after you if they catch you abusing their computers at work in such a matter. In any case, I do wonder if there is something more beyond the surface here that we're not seeing.
This might be understandable if he was going to sites routed through Vanuatu or somewhere else out there that charges ridiculous rates and leaving the navy with a huge tab. I've known people who got phone bills where they were charged $16 a minute by a porn site. A couple hours on a few of those...
But here I have to wonder what's really going on.

Re: For the Record
They are that size, because from what I understand the Canadian government couldn't afford anything else. But for their primary purpose, ASW they are sufficent. That's if their Sea King is flyable though, otherwise their quite useless. In fact the Sea King is currently in the process of being replaced, but from what I've heard they will still be flying as late as 2008. Which given the loss rate of 1-2 a year, they should kill another 12 people.Lonestar wrote: The RCN visits Naval Station San Diego occasionally. Either there's some Navy brass that really don't like him, or the guy's a moron. This begs the question: What computer was it? Was he in a military building using a military computer that's only for strict military stuff? Or was he using a computer provided to him (by the Navy) for his own personal use?
I'd be willing to bet that it was a pc given to him to work at home. The Department of National Defense firewall stops all porn access to pc's at work.Lazy Raptor wrote:Either there's some Navy brass that really don't like him, or the guy's a moron. so why would you want this guy thrown out? wouldn´t it be better if neither officers NOR NCOs get thrown out for stuff like this?Cpl Kendall wrote: I'm just sick of the officers getting away with whatever they want in the Canadian Forces, if it was an NCO, they'd throw the book at him. As I said before, I want an example made of him. I've seen numerous officers get away with shit so bad that if an NCO did it, they'd be in the stockade so fast they wouldn't know what hit them. Plus dishonourably discharged. This could serve as a warning to the rest of them.salm wrote: so why would you want this guy thrown out? wouldn´t it be better if neither officers NOR NCOs get thrown out for stuff like this?

That must be one shithot firewall! I'm reminded of the Dilbert comic when claims he can design a filter that can overcome the collective sex drive of every teenage in America.
