Maybe it's because the people driving them tend to be assholes. I've lost count of the number of times I've been cut off by some asshole in a BMW. BMWs seem to be quite trendy among a particular socio-economic group which is closely correlated with asshole driving techniques. Perhaps there's a special BMW driving school where they teach new owners how to cut people off in traffic.
My best friend has a great theory on why this is so, he suspects that many people only have BMW's because they got in a pervious traffic accident and bought one with there lawsuit winnings and or insurance settlement.

How do you explain the fact that Mercedes and Lexus do not generate the same anger? They're not exactly cheap. BMW marketed itself as the "sports luxury car", and they seem to be popular with people who like to drive aggressively but who are older, have money, and do "important" things so they feel justified in talking on their cell-phones while merging on the highway at 140 km/h.
Well they try to advertise their products as sports luxury; in reality even the better ones drive pretty poorly, which doesn't help the situation.
