I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Oh Jesus, can you imagine the smell? How the hell didn't anyone notice?

The building was abandoned.

The man, then 57 and divorced with children, suddenly stopped coming in to work two decades ago but none of his relatives ever asked police to search for him.

Now that is just fucked up.

It's bad that none of his co-workers cared enough to have someone check into things when he stopped showing up, but that he had children and an ex-wife and they didn't bother asking about him either. :x
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.

Thought that'd be after he died, but still, that's nasty.

Would be dependant on the job. He could have just been emplyee #23422 in cubicle #435334x. The kind of place where there were so many people that one going missing wasn't that noticable.

The family thing is more disturbing. What about his (assuming he had any) friends.

It's entirely possible police reports were filed by his family, just not mentioned in the report. (It wouldn't be relavent)
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

The man probobly had no friends or a good social life. Hence no one cared about him when went missing.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

After reading that, you could do an iteresting 6th Senseish movie on this thing.

Poor guy. Disappeared one day and nobody cared enough to go looking for him. :(

But this was in Japan. It's surprising that the family didn't go searching for him. The article didn't mention it, but could it have been a suicide? Sad, no friends or family who cares about him, so he finds a deserted apartment somewhere and pops some pills?

How the fuck? It was bad enough when a guy died 3 floors below my apartment and wasn't found for two days when the resident manager finally forced his way in (we had all noticed the smell to say the least, but thought it was a dead animal in a vent)

Any smell would have dissipated after about 6-8 months after death, to a certain extant, at least.
Also:
Police believe the man, an employee of the construction firm that built the apartments in 1973, moved in after the building was vacated when the firm managing it went bankrupt, the reports said.
If the buliding was vacant, it's really no wonder no one noticed...
After 20 years he would have smelled more like the apartment than the apartment smelled like him.

I am dissapointed by the lack of large, greusome picture's of the guy's rotting corpse in the article, but it's still an interesting story.

After twenty years, there probably wasn't much to see beyond a modly dusty mat and a skeleton with scraps of clothing clinging to it.

Wow.

If the apartment was his, wouldn't someone have entered it in 20 years. Either as part of a police search or resale of the place?
