It is legal to carry melee weapons openly in Montana. I could take my Kukri (Ghurka to the uninitiated) and wear it on my belt and I would be perfectly legal. Then again I can walk the streets carrying an M-16 (preban and with a Class-3 liscence mind you) and would still be perfectly legal.

Anyway, it's legal to wear a sword in Atlanta as long as it's in plain view and the wearer does not remove it from its sheath. You can't legally run around with it out, but you can have your sword at your hip.

AFAIK, in Canada, it is legal to openly display melee type weapons such as swords. If you enter a bar, you are required to hand over your weapons to either the door staff or the bartender.
If a cop feels that you are a (potential) disturber of the peace, he can confiscate your weapons, but must provide you with a receipt and you can claim your sword down at the station.
