It is a common misconception that CPR “brings people back,” once their heart has stopped. CPR supplies blood and oxygen to the brain to keep the brain alive until a defibrillator can reach the victim. Brain damage begins 4-6 minutes after the heart stops, and is usually complete after 10 minutes. CPR is designed to improve the survival rate of this 10 mintue window. The sooner a defibrillator arrives to the victim, the better the chance of survival. As a general rule, the chance of survival decreases by 10% for every minute of cardiac arrest. If bystander CPR is initiated immediately and a defibrillator arrives to the victim within 5 minutes offers the best chance of survival. However, even with the best of chances, the desired outcome is not achieved.

If it helps anything, I'm going to be AED trained soon, so if I DO encounter a case like this, I can at least do something about if given the right equipment.

Boy Dies After Rescuing Friend From Pool

CHICAGO RIDGE, Ill. (AP) - A 6-year-old boy who rescued a playmate from a debris-filled swimming pool but couldn't get himself out of the water has died.

Donald Houser-Richerme had been hospitalized in critical condition since June 7, when rescue crews found his limp body in a half-empty pool at an apartment complex.

He died Monday, Police Chief Tim Baldermann said.

Donny had been exploring the area with his younger brother and a 5-year-old friend, Karah Moran, when they found the gate to the pool area unlocked and went in.

Karah either jumped or fell into the empty, shallow end of the pool, then slid on debris into the water gathered at the deep end. Though Donald couldn't swim, he jumped in after her and was able to push her to a ladder, family members said. But he couldn't save himself, and authorities said he was under water as long as 20 minutes.

''That family has been through an awful lot this past week, and throughout the whole ordeal they've shown a lot of dignity, class and strength,'' Baldermann said.

Authorities said they would not file charges against the owner of the apartment complex after learning a maintenance man had cut the pool's lock.

Even though I like what the little guy did, I don't think it was worth his own life. He got zippo out of it other than six feet of dirt on top of him. Nice, but a shame and self-defeating.

Up here in Canada you have to have a five foot high fence around your pool and a properly secured gate. Otherwise you could be held responsible if someone falls in and drowns.

She circumvented a blockage in order to go into an obviously restricted area in order to impress her little friends, and her parents allowed her to wander around unsupervised.

This is an apartment complex, with cars and people coming and going. I have a 6 year old son (actually almost 6; he will turn 6 in August), and I know what a 6 year old is intellectually capable of; this girl was and is an idiot. Moreover, her mother is a fucking idiot too, and lacks the excuse of youth and inexperience.

PS. Having said that, the building is still negligent. The pool was not cleaned and the gate was not secured. The concept of negligence does not seem to penetrate Joe Average's head; it has nothing to do with whether the injured party was an idiot. You are negligent if you fail to meet your duty of care, period.
