Jedi classes

Post by Lord Revan »

In KOTOR there is three jedi classes. Do you think these classes are official or game mechanics.

the classes are

Jedi Guardian:A warrior jedi, they focus on combat training and masterful use of the lightsaber

Jedi Consular:they focus more on mental side of the Force, they try avoid combat more often then enter it

Jedi Sentinel:they seek a balance between the physical and mental disciplines of the Jedi Order( or The Sith).

To what class would these canon jedi( and dark jedi) belong to
  1. Yoda
  2. Obi-Wan Kenobi
  3. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
  4. Palpatine/Darth Sidious
  5. Darth Maul
  6. Mace Windu
  7. Luke Skywalker
And last (but not least), if you were a jedi to what class would you belong

Are you refering to Padawan, Knight, and Master?

If so, those are actually canon, and it's pretty easy to determine who's what, because we just go by what they're called.

The short version is no, they're not 'real' classes.

However, the SWRPG (d20), on which KOTOR is based, also uses a similar system -- Jedi guardians and Jedi consulars. Jedi sentinels are not used in the actual RPG system and were invented as a middle-ground class, much like the scout serves as a middle-ground class between soldier and scoundrel in the game.

The SWRPG defines your character list as the following:
1) Yoda: Consular
2) Obi-Wan Kenobi: Guardian
3) Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader: Guardian
4) Palpatine/Darth Sidious: Not applicable (Dark Side Devotee/Sith Lord)
5) Darth Maul: Not listed, probably not applicable
6) Mace Windu: Guardian
7) Luke Skywalker: Guardian

The classes are game mechanics, but there ARE differences in Jedi, and some of them tend towards fighting or negotiating more than others. However, there isn't the clear separation promoted by the game, with many Jedi doubtless having the skills of both Guardians and Counselors, or Sentinels and Counselors. Additionally (and let's face it) the ridiculous single-class abilities are pure game mechanics. A counselor is still going to have SOME Force-leaping ability. In regards to the different classes of the characters, I just picked the one I think they're closest to matching.

Yoda-Counselor.

Obi-Wan Kenobi-Sentinel

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader-Guardian

Palpatine/Darth Sidious-Counselor

Darth Maul-Guardian

Mace Windu-Sentinel (really combines both Guardian and Counselor attributes)

Luke Skywalker-Sentinel (again, combines Guardian and Counselor attributes)

I'm with the ones that say game mechanics, although I'd also agree with the fact there would probably be quite a few differences in the Jedi themselves. Keep in mind, KotOR also had three non-Jedi classes, I doubt one would argue that those classes are an accurate breakdown of the people in the galaxy.

Yeah, Windu is more a badass sentinel than a guardian.

Actually, in the offical D20 Star Wars books, Darth Maul is a Dark Side Marauder or a Jedi Gaurdian (2 variants exsists to take into account the Sith classes), and Windu is a Jedi Guardian

How do classes work in the D20 game? Is it like D&D3? Can you multiclass a Consular for level 1, Scoundrel for level 2 and a Guardian for level 3?

Sounds a lot like the "classes" Jedi Academy uses in Siege Mode. ; )

Then again, this is all games stuff, like the "force ranks" in all the Jedi Knight games.

Well, that's one of the reasons the KOTOR rpg "engine" sucks... shitty blaster damage, and no multiclassing, and mediocre "middle-ground" classes :P

The problem with the KOTOR combat engine is that the crippled all the blaster stuff from the d20 RPG. Blasters do 3d6, not 1d6! Heavy blasters/rifles 3d8, lightsabers 2d8+d8 for reaching certain thresholds in your Jedi training, etc. Had they retained that, it'd have been much better, I think.
