Yoda or Emperor? Raw force power...
I don't know if this has been done before (I'm sure it has but I couldn't find it), but I want to know who is in greater control of the Force. Who is more powerful and which could kick the other's ass.
Well?
Well?
I think in Dark Empire or something it is revealed that Palpatine is the strongest force user there has ever been.
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.
I don't recall that from Dark Empire.
Personally, I think Yoda has greater control. Which in turn, implies greater power. He does have 900 years over Palpatine. Of course, if Palpatine's 'force clone' idea was in effect long before Dark Empire and the rest of the films, then he may actually be a lot older than he appears in the films.
Uh, tough to say. I'm going to simply stay on the side of Yoda - he's older, and displays the ability to absorb force lightning as well as swing a sabre.

Palpatine has demonstrated far greater capability to alter the physical world including mind manipulation(from Thrawn Trilogy), using the force, perhaps the greatest in Galactic history.
In terms of using the force for sensing and perception, it is arguable that Yoda wins in this category since Palpatine failed to kill and even find Yoda and Yoda seemed more ready to die than Palpatine did.
In terms of being "attuned" to the force, it is arguable either way because of their respective failures to prevent catastrophic events. I would go with Yoda on this one, because his influence did win in the end.
In a one-on-one battle, it would come down to whether or not Yoda could absorb a force storm or make Palpatine lose control of the force storm, like Luke, Leia and Anakin the fetus did in Dark Empire. I think Yoda could accomplish the latter in some circumstances, however in Dark Empire, Palpatine was not directly attacking Luke and Leia when he lost control of the storm.
Palpatine is the more "powerful" of the two, and Yoda could succeed only turning Palpatine's own sith powers onto Palpatine. With Palpatine entirely focussed on killing Yoda, he could unleash such a devastating onslaught that Yoda would be overwhelmed. A force storm rips apart the space time continuum and Yoda is not invulnerable after all.

Palpatine does, like all Sith, possess his own lightsabre.
And he began inhabiting clone bodies shortly before A New Hope, officially.

In the Dark Fleet trilogy, Luke was pretty sure that Yoda was more powerful than Palpie. Being the last Jedi and having known both of them, I'm giving the young Skywalker some credit.
However, while Yoda is more powerful, it would seem that Palpatine is able to use his powers in a much more destructive way.

Going strictly by the movies, the Emperor appeared weak, and he failed to foresee the fall of his empire, where as Yoda both foresaw his own death and the dark times of the republic. He knew the republic was coming to an end once Palpatine gained his "temporary powers"
So Yoda

Except for the fact that... Yoda ran the fuck away from Palpy.

I thought I heard somewhere that Palpatine foresaw the Empire's downfall but knew that the Empire (Dark Empire's time) would be even more powerful then before.Sunstreaker wrote:Going strictly by the movies, the Emperor appeared weak, and he failed to foresee the fall of his empire, where as Yoda both foresaw his own death and the dark times of the republic. Also, I think Palpatine has shown some more powerful feats, but Yoda has a kickass fighting style.

given that palpatine had an army behind him while yoda didn't, that would only be pragmatic, you'd think.NecronLord wrote:Except for the fact that... Yoda ran the fuck away from Palpy.

Somehow I don't doubt that Yoda could get close enough to fight him if he wanted to. Note the lack of Darth Maul deciding to gun the Jedi down in TPM.Darth_Zod wrote:given that palpatine had an army behind him while yoda didn't, that would only be pragmatic, you'd think.NecronLord wrote:Except for the fact that... I don't know whether this is canon or not, but I hear a lot said about how the Dark Side of the Force eats away at the body (that is supposedly why Palpatine is so ugly in ROTJ and presumably will be in Episode III).
In this sense, the Dark Side could be compared to some sort of steroid. Palpatine could well beat Yoda in combat, but Yoda can outlast Palpatine.

it is canon, according to various RPG books and i'm sure other sources. The powers granted by using the dark side result in the dark side of the force draining away your body's own vital energies. Or something to that effect anywayHaze Gray wrote:I don't know whether this is canon or not, but I hear a lot said about how the Dark Side of the Force eats away at the body (that is supposedly why Palpatine is so ugly in ROTJ and presumably will be in Episode III). .

I wouldn't say so, as Yoda didn't actually hide himself using his own abilities, he used the Dark Side aura on Dagobah.Bertie Wooster wrote: In terms of using the force for sensing and perception, it is arguable that Yoda wins in this category since Palpatine failed to kill and even find Yoda and Yoda seemed more ready to die than Palpatine did.
We never see him with a saber in the movies (yet), but one would think that he must know how to use one, otherwise, how did he train Maul? It's not like either of them were ever Jedi...
I'd say Palpy is more powerful. He was able to manipulate lots of minds in his rise to power (even if Yoda wouldn't stoop to such a thing, because he's a Jedi, I doubt he could do that), he was able to hide from all those Jedi Masters who were in close vicinity of him almost constantly, and he can toss all that lightning from both hands (Yoda seemed to struggle a bit with Dooku's lightning, but he could handle it, what about Palpy's? Who knows).
Since we've seen what the Force can do to a 900 year old muppet in terms of agility, I'm sure if Palp needed to, he could flip around like a madman too.
According to the EU, Palpatine has been dead a long time when Luke meets him. He's more akin to Exar Kun, being an evil dark spirit that possesses clone bodies. How do you kill a Dark Force Spirit? If you know how, then that's how you kill Palpatine. Then again, if Palpy kills Yoda, Yoda comes back as a spirit and then they have to fight each other that way. The Battle Rages on!

I don't see Yoda clouding the minds of billions of beings in order to secretly bury a 11-mile Super Star Destroyer under the surface of Coruscant.
I don't see Yoda hiding from Sith while standing no less than 2 meters away from them.
I don't see Yoda creating anything resembling the awsome power of a Force Strom.
Palpatine wins this one hands down.
