Child abuser begs for mercy from judge

Oshawa — A mother who pleaded guilty to locking her two adopted sons in cages for 13 years when they were not in school and forcing them to wear diapers as teenagers begged for leniency yesterday.
"Please have mercy on us," she asked in a letter to the judge who is to sentence her and her husband.

"I'm so very sorry, as is my husband," says the letter, read out in court by her lawyer, Alexander Sosna.

The letter forms part of Mr. Sosna's submission on sentencing in a case that Crown prosecutor Soula Olver described as "a tragedy that deprived two innocent children of their childhood."

The parents cannot be identified, to protect the boys who are in the custody of the local children's aid society.

The couple -- the boy's 42-year-old biological aunt and her 52-year-old husband -- pleaded guilty in January to two counts each of assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and failing to provide the necessities of life.

The boys, now 17 and 18, were one and two years old when adopted.

The horrors they endured at the couple's farmhouse in Blackstock, near Port Perry, were uncovered when three family members contacted the children's aid society. Police and child-welfare workers descended on the family home on June 4, 2001.

They found a 15-year-old boy curled up in a cage fashioned from a baby's crib. The cage was strapped to the wall and padlocked.

His brother, then 14, walked out from a room that contained a second cage.

The boys told a horrific story of being beaten, forced to sleep in the cages, often given only buttered bread for dinner, of eating their feces to avoid being punished for having an accident and of drinking their urine when deprived of water.

The boys did not learn until after they had been removed from the couple's custody that their biological mother died when they were toddlers and that the couple they considered their parents are their aunt and uncle.

Judge Donald Halikowski of the Ontario Court will hand down the sentences on July 5.

Lawyers for the couple asked for conditional sentences. That would mean no jail time but a period of house arrest.

Ms. Olver said that is unacceptable. The court, she said, must send a strong message that the abuse of vulnerable children will not be tolerated.

She asked for penitentiary terms: six to eight years for the mother, three to five years for the father.

The letter to the judge was the third entered into evidence yesterday. The mother had written two others, one to each of her sons, in which she apologizes for the harm done to them and speaks of her love for them.

She wept silently as Mr. Sosna read out the letters.

To the oldest boy -- neither boy was in court -- she wrote: "I'm sorry I put you in a cage. It was cruel. I deserve the charges." She urged him not to be afraid of her and her husband because "even if you hate me, I will always love you."

She told the other son that he did not deserve what was done to him. "I still love you and always will," she wrote.

All three letters are meant as evidence of remorse.

Yet all three are also an attempt to defend the abuse. "I didn't know help was out there . . . we didn't understand you."

Another letter contained this rationalization: "I was so depressed for so long. I couldn't take it anymore . . . I've cried a river of tears . . . I feel I was being pulled into a dark hole."

And she blames the boys: "Your behaviour became more difficult to deal with as you got older."

Of course their "behaviour" got more difficult to "deal with" as the boys grew older! They've started to understand what was happening to them and how unjust it was. She should be fucking grateful none of the boys broke and stabbed the broad and her dumb asshole of a husband at the first occasion!

I wish them a very good time behind bars. While I have no love for convicts in general, I'm sure they're gonna have some really good fun, and I seriously doubt the guards will go out of their way to stop their little love sessions

Ahh, so I must have done that because I think only important court cases happen in the US rather than because in my experience, the only country where this kind of depravity occurs is the US.
