Just because Thrawn is a great battlefield commander doesn't mean he'll be a great chess player. Patton was undoubtedly a better general than Kasparov would have been. Does that mean if Patton were still alive, he could whip Kasparov's ass in a chess match? Chess is an abstraction with strict rules, and it's a game with which Spock is familiar and Thrawn isn't.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

It apears (to me at least) that 2d chess is a sort of subset of 3d chess. I imagine that it is a lot easier to go from 3d to 2d than vise versa, and both are probably easier than starting from scratch.evilcat4000 wrote:I dont recall seeing Spock play modern chess in TOS series or in the movies.Darth Wong wrote:Is there any evidence that Spock has ever played 2D chess at all?
Also I can't see thrawn's greatest strength, his prediction of his opponents actions, helping him much. Spock will simply be playing the most logical moves. Predictable, but not exactly easy to deal with.

Very true.RedImperator wrote:Just because Thrawn is a great battlefield commander doesn't mean he'll be a great chess player. Patton was undoubtedly a better general than Kasparov would have been.
