I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

They're showing a video of the guy begging for his life. Very gut-wrenching stuff.

And its our fault for making such a huge media circus out of these beheadings simply because they are gruesome. The best thing we can do right now is ignore these assholes and not give them round-the-clock CNN coverage.

Reuters:
DUBAI (Reuters) - An Iraqi group has threatened to behead a South Korean hostage if Seoul does not end cooperation with U.S. occupying authorities, a videotape aired on Arabic television station Al Jazeera said on Monday.

"We ask you to withdraw your forces from our land and not to send any more troops, and if not we'll send you this Korean's head," one of a group of armed, masked man standing around the Korean man said.

A banner in the background named the group as Jama'at al-Tawhid and Jihad, the name of the militant group led by al Qaeda operative in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Well, shit. There goes another hostage. These people aren't even bothering to make realistic demands, are they?

Well, he's doomed. I wonder how South Korea's going to react to this though.

They're not interested in making realistic demands. They make demands that are impossible to meet so they'll have "justification" for beheading a hostage. The idea is to scare other foreigners into leaving and over time prompting foreign governments to pull out, leaving the bulk of the Iraqi people to the fundamentalists' tender mercies.

In a way, it's almost a relief. In a way, I'd much rather have terrorists making pie in the sky ransom demands that won't change very much rather than them making specific realistic demands toward a specific strategy. If they were doing the latter, it would mean that they've got a plan that they can execute and are putting the pieces together for, but with "We demand you remove all troops within 72 hours and kiss our toesies on the way out" demands, they are just trying to be scary. It proves that they don't understand Rule #2 of Super Villainy: a Master Plan is composed of incremental realistic goals.

Unfortunately, it's really small comfort, since it means that heads will roll for no reason.
