Latest MGS3 Video

Post by Admiral Valdemar »

http://jpn01.konami.co.jp/movie/mgs3/mgs3_e3pv_live.zip

Download. That. NOW!

AVI, 45MB.

I haven't been this excited about a game since first hearing about MGS2.

Okay, to summarise.

-The plot is in 1964 for definite. It takes place in a very uncertain time for the world as the Cold War really gets going. It takes place within a Soviet territory for sure and involves insertion via a Hercy Bird with Snake doing the first HALO jump. The C-130 seems to have a much younger Colonel on too.

-The graphics from this video seem to be greatly improved. The attention to detail is superb. The movement of the models is also nothing but top notch and everything they did right in MGS2 is back for this installment.

-Music is astoundingly cinematic, though it's Harry Gregson-Williams, so what do you expect? Some sounds bit too like some of his latter titles in cinema, but the new version of the MGS theme sounds great and very effective and atmospheric. If another OST comes out, I'm buying it naturally.

-Weapons, ah, now there's something fun. We see Snake with an M-16, enemies with trusty AKs and you can even use fixed emplacements such as 7.62mm GPMGs or 14.5mm KPV AA guns. Diverse as ever with some new tricks.

-Moves are greater now with the hostage thing being improved upon. You can basically jump a guy from behind and he'll know the game's up and lie down, nice and quiet. Though you'll no doubt have the odd hero wannabe.

-Our favourite gunslinger is back, noticeably younger and... what's this? Using an auto? He's not got the ponytail nor the Colt SAAs, but Revolver Ocelot is certainly a part of this, albeit he seems to be the rookie compared to Snake. But then this IS Big Boss, not Solid.

-Odd things abound. There is a scene with some weird, what were first looking like choppers searching, but soon seen to be basically flying platforms for one soldier. You deal with them again and once you defeat them with a nice AA gun...

-...You meet a Hind again! Only no Liquid with a cool taunt. No, it's a horrible Hind-A this time with that fugly nose. Never fear, they seem easier to take down with an RPG-7 or two. But there seems to be a load of them. This is the Cold War.

-Finally, the plot is basically the usual fare with a twist. It seems the first Metal Gear was created by this Soviet scientist you are sent to retrieve unharmed. Failure to do so may lead to full out nuclear war (only unlike normal, the Reds may win if this new MG is anything to go by).

There's some higher up Commie who obviously had a facelift done by a T-34 or something. He also seems to have knuckle dusters which act like Tasers, so getting punched by this dude may hurt. Lots. In anycase, he's the one who wants what he names as "Metal Gear" to win against the US. Whether he's a standalone complex or working for the gov't, I can't say. He seems to have a strong female officer with him too who lectures Snake on the finer points of war and deception.

And that's it. Best to watch the damn video. But I truly cannot wait for this since it may have a completely unseen plot twist like the whole MGS2 thing not being all on a tanker etc.

1964? The Mi-24 entered production in 1970.

(Waits for download to finish)

EDIT: oooh, nice Dragunov

Still not the best AI- how could those idiots not hear it?

Hahahahah a young Revolver Ocelot! Using a PM (guess you can't get Colts in the USSR)

Nice DShkM 12.7mm ....

Eh? Soviet pilots on Hover .... thingies. Ok, so it's still MGS ... :)

LOL a ZU-23 ... cool

Hmmm- that HIND pilot is the most incompetent ever. But no, if it's 1964 the HIND-A shouldn't be in existence. Still in development.

Beautiful RPG-7V animation!

Soviet CBR troops with flamethrowers- nice

PK machine gun

Can anyone tell what guns those red-beret troops have? (silly uniform, but anyway)

Hmm- that chick had a wierd gun

Big Boss with eye patch! Yup. Definitely young, Solid Snake looking Big Boss, as suspected.

Complete with standard MGS preachiness!

(LOL- Big Boss telling ocelet he's not cut out for a semi-auto like the PM, should be using a revolver!)

What was up with that Kuwabara thing?

Did that guy remind anyone else of Raiden? Right down to the nut grab from MGS2?

In conclusion: Looks awesome.

Ooh! I like! Although I would have prefered they had resolved the cliffhanger from the end of MGS2. But for all I know, this will resolve it.

And what the fuck was going on at the end of it. Makes me want to play through it just to find out why the hell Face was groping that solidiers's balls.

I'm telling you dude, that guy is related to Raiden. Or it's just an in-joke in relation to MGS2.

Preferably the former. I love cheesy game plots where everyone knows everyone else!

Oh- and looks like you *can* get Colt revolvers in the USSR ...

Hey did anyone else see that woman who looked alot like Sniper Wolf from MGS1? I don't think it's her because she would be way to young (if she has even been born) but it looks alot like her.

It's obviously an in-joke, it's in the last minute of the video and all MGS trailers have a funny ending. Remember the GTA: VC reference in the last one?

I doubt Raiden's family is in it.

As for the Hind, I can only say that they must've been working on them a lot earlier here to supplement Metal Gear given the need for gunships in that terrain.

And I'll bet Ocelot got those Colts in the States somehow. :D

True, though I bet that scene is still in the game (just different dialog).

Yeah ... does look kinda like him though.

Sillyness. Oh well, alternate universe, whatever.

Nah, see he had them on hand just in case the world's greatest soldier kicked his arse and told him he should use revolvers because he's not suited to automatics like the PM :)

Though one *must* wonder why he has spurs on his boots. There *was* a horse in that video ... so meh.

And can I say I did not enjoy Snake/ Big Boss getting his arse kicked by some chick in a strange looking jumpsuit? Bollocks. It is an unwritten rule of MG that Snake is not defeated. He always wins. Always. Against everyone. Cyborg Ninjas, Metal Gears, insane amounts of enemy troops at the same time, gunships, it doens't matter to him.

But this is Big Boss and it was a time ago, so he obviously still had stuff to learn. Because it was a girl, he probably didn't expect much. Remember, this isn't the same guy who was bitter because of his life being simply based off being a tool for the gov't. This is long before Zanzibar and his efforts to steal Metal Gear. What we see here is similar to what Anakin was like before he became Vader. Young, naive maybe and soon to find out they've been used. I'll bet that image of Big Boss with the patch (a story to be explained no doubt) will be one of the last scenes of the game setting us up for Metal Gear.

As for Revolver, he probably was one of those cowboy fans who couldn't really live that dream given he's a Soviet soldier and thus, not likely to be allowed to visit the States. I'll bet his family had those Colts from years ago, maybe as they emigrated to the US or something. I'm happy to see he has them back. As good as he was, it didn't look right with that semi-auto.

I'm just wondering if, like MGS2, we're on the wrong track. I spent ages going over what may happen in that game with my brother only to find Snake isn't even in it half the time and you don't play him and it's also not on a tanker.n My bro seems to think that this whole jungle scene is only half the game...

I have the strange feeling that the game will move from the jungle to the mountains to secret mountain base, and so on... but it's quite obvious from the flow of the movies.

iirc at the end of the movie they proudly state "Playstation 2 exclusive" so... does this mean us pc users are gonna miss out? Hopefully they will just release another version for the pc as they did with MGS2

When they say that, it's usually for a limited time. MGS2 was an exclusive for the PS2 as was GTA: VC and yet both came out on other platforms such as Xbox and PC. I don't see why you should worry, only you'll have to wait a lot longer for this, but that'll give most time to get the hardware to run such a game.

Excellent, no offense to the ps2 but I'd rather they spend time porting it properly to the pc rather then just wrapping it in an installer.

Actually, MGS2: Sons of Liberty never came out for either Xbox or PC, it was the rereleased MGS2: Substance that got the port.

Which is basically MGS2 with a couple of extras. That's just semantics.

No it isn't. It let Konami make a deal for an exclusive game on the PS2, then rerelease it under another title with minor changes. The fact that the games were almost identical is why the whole thing is so funny.

Yes, but in this context it doesn't matter as it is MGS2 with extras just like MGS: Integral. The fans don't care for the other stuff, they want the meat; the proper game.

So in other words, expect them to do this again (and in anycase, it didn't stop Rockstar from porting GTA: VC which was an "exclusive" too). Time changes things it seems since Halo was an exclusive to Xbox at one point.

Yeah, but we don't know the deal that Rockstar had with Sony for GTA:VC, nor how long the exclusivness lasted for. MGS2 OTOH was stated by Kojima as being a strict exclusive which he worked around by releasing MGS2: Substance.

 I doubt Bungie has to worry about exclusive contracts; they are a first party developer.

Well Bungie did rise up in the world since they started that project. I can't say their late release of a PC version of Halo miffed me as I didn't care for it anyway.

MGS3, however, I do. Hence I'm getting that PS2 version when it comes out. I still sort of wanted them to wait until the PS3 though.

Has anyone else wondered about Snakes age in this game? I had him down as being in his mid to late thirties by the time of MGS2.

He always loves spaghetti Westerns according to MGS; I guess he still figured his automatic was still better until Big Boss slapped him about.

The guys in MGS2 definitely could hear the PSG-1; its probably not complete.

Also, I think this enemy Colonel guy is a rogue; since Khruschev called up Johnson about it and they sent in the "Ocelot unit" of Spetsnaz to clean house.

I also hope they don't get David Hayter to do Big Boss' voice; that would be to the retarded movie brain bug in AOTC that all clones would have the same voice, and more over be obviously self-contradictory since Solidus, Snake, and Liquid all had different voices.

Here's some thoughts.

Snake and Liquid both served in the Gulf War, which means they had to join and be trained with the Green Berets and SAS respectively before insertion in Desert Storm; what's a realistic lower limit on their age, Skimmer, Vympel, etc.?

The Outer Heaven insurrection occurred in 1995; the Zanzibar Land action in 1999; In the Darkness of Shadow Moses as part of MGS2, Nastasha remarks something about 2004.

Desert Storm was in 1991; Outer Heaven in 1995; Zanzibar Land in 1999; Shadow Moses in >2004; Tanker sinking in >2006; Big Shell in >2008.

We know from Liquid's line in MGS that he and Snake are both thirty as of then (maybe a little more): "After thirty long years, finally, the two us meet." This is a problem; 2005 - 1991 = 14; 30 - 14 = 16. Too young. So I guess Liquid was either rounding down some or Shadow Moses was as late as 2007 or later even, depending on realistic projections of a SAS operative's or Green Beret's minimum concievable age in Desert Storm.

The Snake Eater Mission was in 1964; ten years later he was "in his late fifties" and had Liquid, Snake, and Solidus made from him. Somehow to me though; I don't see him looking like he was in his 40s already. And the "Le Enfants Terribles" Project had to be in the pretty early 70s in order for Snake and Liquid to realistically participate in Desert Storm.

Well, if Big Boss was a heavy smoker, it might be justifiable- it would really depend on where he was raised (Liquid). For all we know, Solidus' voice was different merely because he wasn't a heavy smoker.

Their age at what time? By MGS2, mid 30s at least.

Big Boss definitely does not look like a rookie in that video- he's grizzled. Also, Liquid said "in his fifties", IIRC, not "in his late fifties"- could be wrong, but I can't be bothered firing up MGS2 to remember.

Remember though, they are a pair of exceptional soldiers, and with the all-seeing eyes of the Patriots or whatever on them, who knows how early they could've gotten into respective spec forces?
