How socialist is Canada?

Post by His Divine Shadow »

I'm just wondering how socialistic it is compared to most european countries, what sort of goverment programs does the canadian goverment run, what do you pay in taxes?

A scale would be fun :D

We'd be considered right-wing compared to many European countries. Students here pay fairly high tuition to go to university, for example, and we get a pitiful 2-week vacation per year.

We are left of Continental Europe and right of the US - how is that for an explanation? We have a mix of private and public systems - public universities (that charge), public health but with some private care (this one is constantly changing), generally pretty decent public education.

Also, taxes aren't the be all and end all of the debate - many countries have extremely high "social security" taxes that aren't part of the tax rate but are "taxes" as far as the average employee is concerned. You almost need to look at taxes as a % of GDP or some other measure to capture all of the fees/taxes/duties, etc... that the system has around.

Yes - you only get 2 weeks by law at the start - it goes up in most provinces. Practically, most places give 3 weeks after a few years (some do it right away). Also, we can actually take them up here - unlike many of our friends in the US :D

Still I'd like to see Finland move more towards a the spot where canada is, we're far too socialistic and the massive inefficiencies and buerocracy is showing it's ugly sides.

Yikes... 2 weeks holidays?

In Germany, you get 6 weeks paid holidays plus the various official holidays (~19 in my state...)

We get 9 stat holidays a year. Easter Monday is a "delayed" Stat (not official) at our firm - we have to work it, but can take it later in the year.
Also, boxing day is also a Stat at our place (common for much of the non-retail sector). Its the day to buy Christmas presents for yourself :D

There are no mandated vacations in the US, but I get 3 weeks paid vacation and 12 paid holidays plus 5 paid sick days and 18 unpaid absences per year.

This doesn't include the 12 weeks of unpaid time off under the Federal FMLA for serious medical conditions.

We're not all working 27 hours a day 400 days a year here in the US.

Shouldn't that be the other way round?

Whoops - thanks for the fix

Although right of the US and left of the EU would put us nicely into the dictatorship land.
Anyone willing to vote for PM for Life Jalinth?
