Sierra is dead

Post by Hotfoot »

Here's the Article

Currently developing games will still be released by Vivendi, such as Half-Life 2, Ground Control 2, and Tribes Vengeance.

This does seem to offer a glimmer of hope for all the B5 fans out there, as Into the Fire may see new light.

Can't say I'm sorry to see Sierra go. In recent years, they've really done quite a bit to actively alienate their customer base.

UBISOFT take heed, you may be next if you don't shape up soon.

I was under the impression that these days Sierra was more of a publisher, companies like Valve, Dynamix and others acutally made the game.

They are, and of course as a result they have a terrible amount of power over their development houses, which resulted in the terrible support for HW: Cataclysm and the canning of B5:ITF. With Sierra gone, we may well see some changes in how things are done with the properties they owned.

In any case, here's to hoping that Vivendi isn't even worse.

There is no hope for ITF. All the materials have been gone for years now. Sierra didn't have a thing left over from ITF.

Maybe we'll see some good games out of their development houses again.

I hope not, or at least not till after Silent Hunter III is released.

Don't count on it. I'm sure Vivendi will greedily hoard the Sierra IP, never touching it but never letting anyone else near it without paying an exorbitant price.

Why didn't JMS license B5 to Sierra like Paramount licenses Star Trek? i.e., Interplay had the license to develop TOS games for a few years, then the license was back up for grabs.

I'm sorry to see them go. They made some fantastic games.

I know the developers of the game tried to continue after Sierra cancelled it.
Everything was all set to continue with the development, but Sierra wouldnt let go of the license or sell them the materials or something like that, even though they said they had no intetnion of ever using it.

ITF may be dead, but I hope this opens the door for a new Babylon 5 game.

So, if Sierra is gone, does that mean all their old games (like the various Quests) are now open to be made downloadable (what's that word again? oldware...no, damn it)?

The term is abandonware.

And no, their old games are still the IP of Vivendi.

Perhaps but some other companies might be able to buy them on the cheap.

I wish I could say I'm sorry to see Sierra go, but I'm not. Same with Interplay in a way, they were once great, but managed through bad decisions to ruin themselves (couldn't think of a better way to word it).
There are two kinds of people in the world: the kind who think it’s perfectly reasonable to strip-search a 13-year-old girl suspected of bringing ibuprofen to school, and the kind who think those people should be kept as far away from children as possible … Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between drug warriors and child molesters.” - Jacob Sullum

I don't think so. Vivendi will hold on to that IP and only give it up for large sums of money.

At least Interplay has the grace to die so hard that they have to sell off IP on the cheap. Sierra'll just foist it off on Viviendi in a last, dying attempt to sodomize their own customers. Meh.

They sold everything off after the license expired according to an associate of mine, which has a mole in what used to be Sierra.
