Thank The Maker?
C-3PO is heard uttering this when he believes he is being rescued from the desert on Tattooine.
The Maker is a god, thus, C-3PO believes in some kind of religeon, Right?
Is Maker Worship something only C-3PO does (his maker...Anakin?), a droid thing, or a widespread general belief in the Galaxy?

Masochist to Sadist: "Hurt me."
Sadist to Masochist: "No."
Sadist to Masochist: "No."
Ummm ... couldn't the 'maker' in Threepio's case just be the person who assembled him? I mean in AotC he refers to machines making machines as purverse.

3PO's delivery of the line seems to indicate that he thought it was more ironic than genuinely perverse. We know what 3PO sounds like when he's genuinely disgusted or horrified, and in that scene, he didn't sound like that.
I've always treated the statement "thank the Maker!" to be just a robot twist to "thank God!" since IIRC, it and similar statements are made by other droids in the EU.
Since droids don't naturally believe in God or any sort of divine higher being, refering to the Maker might be just exclamations with similar connotations, but refering to a generic concept of a "robot creator:" AKA, the Maker.
In reality, it's honestly supposed to be a minor gag.

Maybe it's just a phrase he's picked up from humans or some such.
"Oh no, oh yeah, tell me how can it be so fair
That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"

My guess it's a stock exclamation common to most Basic-speaking droids. Modelled after pseudo-religious "thank God" exclamations uttered by humans and other organic sapients. Protocol droids were meant to be as human-like as possible. And a vague term such as "maker" could apply to numerous galactic religions.
It probably came with the rest of the CG kit he used to assemble 3PO.
And don't other droids say it too?

Doesn't Threepio refer to Aniken as "the maker" in AOTC?

Re: Thank The Maker?
Thank the Maker is a generic "Thank God" statement that Threepio used, as per ANH novelisation. Since the Creator is god, so, a droid Creator, is likewise a god to him.Enola Straight wrote:C-3PO is heard uttering this when he believes he is being rescued from the desert on Tattooine.

Lots of interesting "droid" concepts from the ANH novel actually. Like the "escape is illogical" logic circuit hardwired into all droids, so that if they think of running away from their owners, their brain will shut down. Which of course, begs the pardon of why R2D2 ran away, although he obviously thinks that he's the property of Princess Leia, and Obiwan Kenobi. Which raises the question of how "ownership" is transferred.
Spanky, are you sure?My VCD has it this way
C3PO:"My name is C..."
Anakin:"Threepio?"
C3PO:"oh, er, The Maker!"

Direct from the subtitles on the DVD. Looks to me like he's referring to Anakin as the Maker.Attack of the Clones wrote:Threepio: Oh! Um, uh, hello. How might I be of service? I am C--
Anakin: 3PO?
Threepio: Oh, um -
Threepio: The maker! Oh master Ani, I knew you would return. I knew it! And miss padme. Oh my!
