Actually, they have between 1 and 72 hours to fertilize that egg. If the female just ovulated they have 24 hours(the life of the egg without fertiliztion) if she has not done so yet, they have 3 days for her to do so(max lifespan of sperm)

The reason most f them burn is due to the acidic nature of the vagina. Seminal fluid however is basic, and serves to protet the sperm. Another good portion will be eaten by macro and microphages or lysed by hunterkiller cells(I forget what they are called Basophils I think)
