Palpatine in the Federation

Post by Sarevok »

Senator Palpatine ship is stranded in the milky way galaxy. Fortunately a Federation ship rescues him.

Now the question could Palpatine slowly but eventualy take over the Federation like he did with the Old Republic ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

He would take over with even greater ease then the Republic since wouldn't have worry about the jedi so he could use his power more freely

The Feddies would be eating out of his gnarled hand! Try to picture the emperor blowing redshirts away with sith lightning!

Oh come on, the Emperor is more subtle than that. He'd pretend to be a distinguished diplomat, use the force to trick the redshirts and get him escorted to the bridge. Once on the bridge he kills everyone but the captain, and uses the force to force the captain to give him the command codes. Then he flies near a star, turns on bridge shielding, and shuts off shields to the rest of the ship, so everyone else dies of radiation. (or he skips the star thing, and erects security fields throughout the ship, then goes through and kills people at his leisure)

Jesus. THAT's subtle? You need to reexamine the meaning of the word.

We'll, using mind tricks to get to the bridge and force the captain to give the password is a lot more subtle than what you guys were thinking of

Seems to me the other suggestion was "palpatine walks on a Federation ship. Palpatine starts blowing redshirts all over the place with force lightning and slaughters everybody".

A few things that would make progress harder- security force fields everywhere, wide beam stun...

Yes, I know Jedi can resist stun, but the method for doing so requires concentration and therefore will distract palpatine from whatever he's trying to do.

Yes, I know he can use the force to just tear through the walls to get around force fields, but they will slow him down.

My method is a lot more subtle (until he gets to the bridge anyway) :)

Actually he would be far worse, given he would go into "I'm an old man, nothing more." mode

Have them get him where he wants to go with a force push here and there.

Also given how they centralise things on Earth would be his first course of action after reading their archives.

And well the Federation may get a new title soon enough.

Various sources in the Expanded Universe have collectively presented an interesting picture of Senator Palpatine prior to his election to the Supreme Chancellery. He was evidently a distinguished scholar and intellectual, being particularly noted as a political theorist and collector of art. His politics were apparently moderate and centrist in nature, and he was well-regarded by virtually all of the various factions of the day, although he appeared to be fairly un-ambitious. He was a conscientious and cautious legislator and parliamentarian, very much a consensus builder and compromiser (see, for example, his conduct leading to and during the trade conference in Cloak of Deception).

It is difficult to imagine a more palatable politician for the United Federation of Planets. His writings have become standard reading in distinguished universities in the Core; he is knowledgeable of the liberal arts and of the creative arts, and is, like many legislators on cosmopolitan Coruscant, a gifted linguist. He can easily for the urbane Renaissance Man so beloved of the Federation. He appears bland and uncontroversial, which would be no doubt a positive feature in the drab, conformist society of the Federation.

His parliamentary skills alone would be far greater than those of any member of the relatively homogeneous and small Federation Council (approximately the size of a modern Congressional committee, and laughably tiny compared to Senator Palpatine’s home playing field of the Galactic Senate). Discounting entirely the element of the Force, the Federation Council would be easy prey for a politician of his cunning and experience. One should keep in mind that this is the same intellect that built the Galactic Empire and later authored Operation Shadow Hand, amazingly intricate and Byzantine creations that he alone was able to master fully.

Even without his vast powers of the dark side of the Force, Senator Palpatine would find the United Federation of Planets pathetically easy to manipulate and dominate, using only his purely legitimate political means. If one further considers his more unethical tools -- mind control and influence, criminal connections, and Sith machinations -- and the lack of the Jedi or comparable forces, Senator Palpatine would be in full control of the Federation in a bare handful of years, as compared to his painstaking, decades-long takeover of his own galaxy.

He would climb the political step much easier than what he did in SW until he gets elected President of the Federation.......and you can fill in the rest.

Palpatine would likely insinuate himself into politics somehow (either directly or indirectly) and work his way from there. It shouldn't be too hard to manufacture a crisis with which to cease power- not with all those strong external real and potential enemies the Federation faces. Without Jedi guarding the Federation, the chances of his influence being felt at all are next to nothing.

You mean that lightning that made two relatively powerful Jedi fall to the floor in agony (Anakin in AOTC and Luke in ROTJ)? And it wasn't 5 minutes, either.

Need I point out that Starfleet redshirts (or goldshirts) AREN'T Force Sensitive, and therefore haven't even the ABILITY to withstand Palpatine's Force Lightning?

Given the way he can talk a good game, and the Force having a way with weak minds, he will be leader in little time. (5 to 10 years.) All this from being a refugee, with no name recognition. He will be loved by millions of loyal followers, and bad accidents will befall his rivals and opponents.
He will feel very bad about such terrible thing happening, because after all, no matter how much they opposed him, he felt they were honestly doing what they felt was right, and such moral convition, even in his enemies, should be recognised for the effort to better the Federation and it's people. (Snicker)
In the name of my honorable yet unlucky opponent, as a tribute to their moral courage, I propose that we.......

and so it goes.

I never realy wanted to be Emperor, it was just a responsibility I couldn't shirk. The sacrifices of all those good people couldn't be for nothing.
I shall endevour to be worthy of this unwanted burden of power........

I can imagine a secret meeting between Palpy and the Tal Shiar...arrange a Rom attack and make it look like they can steal a few systems while he seizes power, but then as soon as he steals power uses it to smash the Rommies and gives the Klinks free rein to smash the Cardassians :)

Read Empire's End. Palpatine kills a Jedi apprentice almost instantly with a Force blast. He's not limited to lightning.

Let's take the perfectly reasonable assumption that the fundamentals of Hyperspace technology is understood by Palpatine:

Advances in superluminal drives, communications, and computing would alone make the Federation the Galaxy's superpower.

Hyperdrive may very well also give new insights to transwarp and quantum slipstream drives.

Knowledge of tibanna/turbolaser and proton torpedo tech would also revolutionize weaponry.

I somehow doubt that Palpatine, a career politician and Sith Lord, could reconstruct a hyperdrive from memory, even assuming that the Federation's manufacturing base is up to making one.

Actually, that really depends on how much credit you want to give him and the Force.

However, I agre, it's UNLIKELY, but not impossible
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

Oh come on. He's a Sith lord, remember? They know all. :P

Personally I think Palpatine would fit right at home in TNG era Federation Earth. After the Dominion War, there would be no stopping him. At that point no-one was powerful enough to challenge the Federation; throw in a Sith lord and career politician on top of it makes it just excessive. The only people who are strong enough to fight him commanding the Federation would be the Romulans, or Dominion - and the former have a lot to lose in a war, while the latter have little to gain. The Klingons are in frankly no position to do anything about it. Nor are the Cardassians. The Ferengi follow the money like a bloodhound, so they're not going to do anything unless their interests are curtailed.

The only difficulties he might have would come from the Federation itself, but it's no guarantee any of them would act in time or recognise the danger for what it is. Section 31 might have the resources to take care of Palpatine, but they're more likely to join him! The idealistic starfleet captains would probably be sent to long-range exploration duties to get them out of the way, while men like Admiral Leyton and Captain Jellicoe become the 'New Face' of starfleet - more willing than ever to 'get the job done'.

No, they have a knack for looking like stumps long enough to trick a storm trooper into letting their gaurd down then rolling a log onto him. If the emperor was fighting the ewoks then it would have been a charnel house.

Lets be fair to the federation here, the emperor is going to need his force powers. No unknown person, no matter how good a politician is going to be able to quickly get into any kind of important position in the federation without cheating. There just aren't enough positions for him to quickly find one. I suspect he probably took ages just to get to be a senator back home.

With mind controll he probably could do it, but it would still take some time.

And starfleet is most likely full of a lot more idealists than the old republic navy, so he may well have to deal with a much bigger rebelion. He also has no hope of building any of his favourite superweapons, and without hyperspace he can't get his forces into place to quickly crush rebelion.

I don't think he could get away with his anti-alien speil either considering the amount of aliens in starfleet and the federation.

Also, I can't believe section 31 don't have some kind of system in place to stop outside infiltrators just because they have telepathic powers. I can't see them joining him, their purpose seems to be to allow the federation to be nice and idealist without being in danger. If it has to turn into a military dictaorship then they have failed.

There were more aliens in the Old Republic then the Federation. And besides that, the Federation is ruled almost entirely by humans, anyway, and the Old Republic was dominated by a large variety of species. If anything, it will be easier.
