You're talking to someone who, until recently, refered to a USB port as 'that plug thingy that the mouse goes in' and once fixed her computer by throwing a shoe at it.
Og explain like cave man. playr need Codek thingy to use file like codek name. .mp3 need .mp3 codek ok that's kinda demeaning. Let's start over. The codec lets the player understand the file that has the same name as the codec. So to play .mp3 files your player needs the .mp3 codec. To play .wma files your player needs the .wma codec etc, etc, etc... Now, music encoded as such that it needs the .mp3 codec is veeery popular. Infact, it's so popular that when downloading a player most people ignore it is crap if it doesn't come with the .mp3 codec standard. WMP doesn't come with this codec and doesn't support the kind of codecs you'll find on the internet. THe only way to play one of the most popular kind of files in existance with WMP is to pay for a .mp3 codec from the people microsoft has shown how to work under the hood of WMP or find someone that managed to do it on their own time and is offering their work for free. Hairbrained, no?

I use Quintessential Player, it's frighteningly simple to use.

Winamp 5 for most audio and visual needs, except the few that I need to run in another player.

If I get a real media format, I just use one of the converters I have and switch it over.

Winamp also has a better selection of internet radio stations than WMP, at least in my opinion...

WMA, it came right out of the box with every codec I needed except Xvid, which I used only once, including .Mp3

Quicktime for .mov, since I know of no other utility.

I wouldn't touch Winamp with a 10 foot stick, every time I run it, it slows the system down, loading playlists is slow, clumsy interface IMO.

It is possble to quickly write your own media player using the media player activex control. I tried it and it is a lot of fun. VB can create a media player within minutes however I recommedn C++ for writting a good media player.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
