There's always been an unlimited fine here for it and I hear some cinemas have staff with NVGs to sniff out cameras and dazzler IR lasers to even block the optics.

A new system which uses four colours in the film tape is being looked at which, although is fine to the human eye, fools the simpler camcorder microchips so that colour is way off and the film is unwatchable.

There's also the new system where they flash a pattern of lights for a second on the screen, so they can track where a pirated movie is from.

Actually, it's only a felony if you distribute. Downloading them won't get you anything, at least according to that article.

Also, it's their property they have a right to protect it. This law is far from useless.

Actually, copyright infringement has traditionally been prosecuted by the copyright holder suing the infringer, not by the organs of the state hunting down and persecuting people while spending tax dollars in the process. It is a relatively recent development that copyright infringement has become prosecuted in criminal rather than civil court.

If some people are that stupid in paying to see a movie on video before its officialy released, then they too should be fined for encouraging this, its like those bootleg copies of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four that are sold on the internet.

The phenomenon of easily getting free stuff on the Internet had to come to an end sooner or later. It looks like it's finally happening. A friend of mine said that none of the p2p networks really work any more for downloading illegal stuff. He says he either can't connect to the other users or gets download speeds of like .02 kb/s.

Anyway, I would happily pay a monthly fee to download legally, but no such service exists that doesn't have a piss poor selection and isn't generally inferior to illegal downloading, or is just as expensive as the outrageous CD prices.

Speaking of movie pirating. On the unrated version of EuroTrip the makers of the film included a complete pirated version of the movie that they bought in NYC's China Town 3 months before the regular DVD was released.

They looked at is as pirating it back from the piraters. :) Their comments to introduce the pirated movie were pretty good too.

This pirated version is one of those where someone with a video camera sneaked into a theater and films the movie. I saw a pirated version of Jurassic Park (from Dubai in the UAE) once and it was pretty funny how bad it was because you have people getting in the way of the screen, coughing etc... and the overall picture and sound are horrible.

I assume this screws with the simple 1CCD video cameras?

The quality of pirated VCDs have gone down immensly. They are now commonly camera prints meaning that someone records a video of the movie from a theater. As a result the quality sucks. In the past the quality of pirated VCDs was quite good.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

The article came off as saying it fools all types of commercial camcorders, at least until someone manages to get them to automatically adjust to that technique. I'm unaware of any hardware or software being able to just now.

well . . .it isn't cracking down on file sharing per se, just pirating movies that are brand new in theaters. This actually seems far more reasonable than any of your standard RIAA bullshit tactics.

This friend of yours either is yanking your wank or hasn't tried to look around. Kazaa and its cousins are not the only P2P systems out there. BT is huuuuuuge right now, operates in the open, and most trackers have links to distributors' IRC channels for those who want another way to slap it. Direct Connect is full of elitist pricks, but the hubs are not that hard to find. P2P is bigger than ever, to be honest~
