Selling my Magic cards

Post by Sir Sirius »

I've decided to auction off my Magic the Gathering card collection. 3,1 kg (~1700 to 1800 cards), comprising mostly of 4th Edition and Ice Age cards, along with some Chronicles and Homeland cards. What do you think would be a reasonable asking price?

I'll talk to my brother, who actually plays (I just put up with him rattling off all the combos he can put together ), but a lot of it depends on what individual cards you've got in there. If you have cards that are banned/out of print (or stuff that's just plain ol' rare) they can bump up the market value quite a bit.

By bulk or individuals?

By Bulk little hard since it's almost pot luck but there are a few mags that'll tell you the individuals prices...plus I'd recommend a few websites to see their prices on what they sell.

Minor problem. The cards have been laying in their box untouched for years, I can't remember what I have, nor can I remember what was rare and what was not. Not to mention that I have no idea what is banned or out of print.

I have Deflection, that was rare IIRC... umm, Gaia's Liege and Birds of Paradise... can't remeber others right now.

By bulk, going through the lot of them to see what the price of each is individualy just ain't worth it. In any case I'm not looking for a precise estimate of their worth, a rough questimate for a reasonable asking price will do.

Well, you're in for some sorting work, it would seem. That is, if you want to squeeze top dollar for 'em; very few people will want to bid too high on a box of unknown cards. (For all they know, you could be selling boxes of lands, and you wouldn't technically be defrauding them if you did unless you mentioned specific cards that aren't in there.)

Okay, in light of your latest post, I'll ask my brother what a bulk box of undorted cards would go for.

Their composition is what you get from buying enough of those boxes and bags they come in to amount to 3,1 kg of cards (maybe ten boxes, the rest were from bags).

Hmm...also couple last question, are you going to seperate commons, uncommons, rares, and lands(lands actually go for a better price then most commons)

Also foil and non foiled?

Would do that raise the price? Sure sounds a lot of work.

Found 2 x Wrath of God, Sibilant Spirit and The Wretched... those are rare, I think.

Well here's the list of the fourth edition set. and a list of the others if you feel like sorting them out. :P

Got any Serra Angels? I haven't seen it in a long time...it had a very nice drawing.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

It's a bitch and a half but you can literally charge much more because the person knows what he or she is getting in the pot.

Don't worry about the foil or non foil...but if wondering Foil is literally a shiny card.

You can get five to six times the card worth easily.

and I know the Wraths are rare and go easily for $20, likely more because they are an earlier edition.

Can't remember seeing any cards that are shinier then others, I also can't remember ever hearing about cards shinier then others. Should these foils stand out clearly, or is the difference subtle?

 It would appear that my collection is worth quite a bit more then I expected.

The best way is to get all of one card, and if one is distinctly different it's a foil.

The only other way is that in a certain slant in light, the foil actualy gives off a slightly prismatic look. The problem is it's very slight until the current generation.

Cards from Ice Age and Fourth Edition wouldn't have foil at all. They were grand, before these...petty shiny ones came out. Not sure of the others though, I had quitted after Ice Age came out.

What will your eBay name be under? I might look into some for memories' sake.

A site that sells and buys at rather decent prices

Not a place to base prices completely but gives you an idea...they sell at twice their buy if wondering.

But it does point to one that you likely should keep for indvidual sells.

My brother wants to talk to you about this, Sirius. I know its normally against site policy, but may I allow him to make a post on the matter from my account? I will clearly mark what he said, and he doesn't get my password.

I'd give you $50 for the lot, but I expect you could do better.

Probably a better idea. He's at a Magic tournament right now, actually. I'll have him e-mail you when he gets back.

Okay. My brother's going to e-mail you tomorrow. In the meantime, he says that with some of the cards you named combined with the sheer number of cards, you probably won't want less than $150, maybe $200.

Good. I've been kinda busy at work, but I'll see if I'll have the time to sort the cards out and make a list of all the rare ones.

Don't forget that you'll ALWAYS get a much better price for individuals than for lots.

That and, nobody wants Homelands. Sorry. I had an unopened, unchecked box of Homelands that I couldn't sell, even on e-Bay, for more than 60$ Canadian.

The best sell is to tournament players on sites like Cardshark.com where you can attempt to get an excellent idea of the going rates that marketplace sellers are asking (people who use Scrye to deduce prices are deluding themselves). I'd take my best rares and sell them off one at a time, you'll make a pot. Then get rid of all the leftover commons and junk rares as a lot on E-bay, maybe you'll get lucky and some first-timer kid will pay up.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.
