While looking up info on yer election, I saw this:
had a parlimentary system, but it can't be dissolved; the groups have
to learn to get along with each other, rather than saying "you suck! I
want new elections!". Whyinhell can't more of the English-speeking world
do that?
I asked Vegard about how they did things in Norway, and he said theyMost minority governments in Canada's past have proven unstable and short-lived; another national election could well take place within a year or less if no party gains a majority.

It sounds like a great idea, but I don't think it would work too well in Canada considering how well the parties get along, especially at present. In the end it would most likely result in a government that is paralyzed from internal disagreements. Imagine say, Reagan & Clinton trying to form a coalition government, that's about how well it'll work.MKSheppard wrote:I asked Vegard about how they did things in Norway, and he said they

Hmm, i lived in Buffalo for most of my life and spent a lot of time in Canada, but Im sad to say I never really studied the politics. If anyone has a little time, can you tell me the platforms of your parties? Nothing huge or anything, I was just wondering, generally, what kind of things each supports in the view of the citizens ( i could look it up on the web and get some version of the parties themselves which sometimes can be different than that of the people)

Liberals: balance the budget, try to undo some of the damage they've done over the past 10 years through health care/education cuts by putting money back into those programs, and in other areas, generally continue on the way things have been going.
Conservatives: promise to "make a change" (much of their platform relies on "make a change" rhetoric), clean up the corruption in Ottawa, get rid of the gun registry (and replace it with something new, which they won't describe), spend even more money on health care than the Liberals will, slash taxes, enact forced debt-repayment and balanced-budget legislation, hold a "free vote in Parliament" on gay marriage and abortion (both of which would be outlawed if they got a majority and were able to easily win such a "free vote"), marginalize the Charter of Rights by ignoring the Supreme Court if possible and invoking the "notwithstanding" escape clause in the Constitution otherwise, and greatly beef up our military so we can suck up to Bush better, just like Tony Blair does.
NDP: promise to tax the living shit out of rich people and big corporations, spend vastly more money on health care and education, and "save autoworkers' jobs" through some magical means which Layton has not yet explained. They also want the government to enact proportional-representation laws, so that you can't have this absurd situation where a government has a huge majority despite getting only 40% of the popular vote.

So Mr. Sheppy, I take it you enjoyed those Clinton military cutbacks as well as those half-assed actions in Serbia and the complete lack of a response to terrorist bombings of US assets in the middle east? The Liberals are pulling out a big lead in the Atlantic provinces, but that was to be expected. It remains to be seen what happens when they hit Ontario (Quebec is a foregone conclusion since they will all vote for the Bloc Shitheadsois).

Maybe not all the province but mostly where there is a bastion of retardedness, they just won Gaspesie Iles de la Madeleine and i guarantee that the Saguenay Lac St Jean region will vote BQDarth Wong wrote:The Liberals are pulling out a big lead in the Atlantic provinces, but that was to be expected. It looks like the Liberals win a minor and will end up working with the NDP
This should actually be a interesting government to watch

I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.
It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

As posted in the other thread, the final results:
Liberal:135 seats
Conservative: 97 seats
Bloc(heads): 54 seats
NDP: 21 seats
Independant: 1 seat
Green: 0 seats (yay)
For the record, I (grudgingly) voted Conservative, because the only other choices in my riding were Liberal, NDP, and Green.

oops, not quite final: looks like I missed one "lead" which was enough to give the NDP one extra seat by taking it from the Conservatives...

Libs 135
Cons 99
Bloc 54
NDP 19
other 1
Very interesting since the Lib + NDP don't have enough seats to safely govern. They will likely lose one seat to the Speaker (who doesn't vote unless a tie exist) making it 153 to 154 (if Cons + Bloc vote together - depends on subject) for the gov't.
Well, let the bargaining begin.
The important thing which was pointed out this morning on the newschannel is that not all MPs will be present at all times, which makes things even more interesting. Voting could easily swing either way depending on how many MPs are absent that day. Now the good part, I hope, is that with such a close situation in parliament, MPs will show up for work more often instead of taking month long vacations every couple weeks.
