Saddam back in power? I give it a year.
Honestly, with the ongoing trainwreck of internecine skirmishing, how many Iraqis do you think are beginning to pine for the Good Old Days of Saddam's stability and control?
CBS just reported that he's already made a bid to run in free and open democratic elections...
I may be overreacting, but I will be the last person shocked if it happens.

I dunno, one mayor of Boston won reelection while in prison. I forget his name, though.
Still, I seriously doubt it.

Man those Iraquis are going to pass a law saying the death penalty is legal and they are going to kll him. If they don't, the Kurds and the .. I think the shiites, whichever majority group was being cracked down upon (damn I can't form a coherent thoguht tonight) during Saddam's reign will want blood and they'll want it from the new government....

Both the Shittes and the Kurds were rather abused during the rule of Saddam.
The Kurd however were able to fight back more effectivly due to terran advantages and the no fly zones. The Kurds are also still armed and really wanting to see Saddam shot, I'd give it to them if I was the new Iraqi government.

Begin the show trial!Iraqi officials insist Saddam and the others will get fair trials. Asked whether justice includes the possibility that Saddam might walk out a free man, perhaps on a legal technicality, al-Bayati said there was "no chance at all."
"The whole world will see this," said al-Bayati, who said he was tortured in Saddam's prisons in the 1970s. "He won't be able to walk free."

Of course he's guilty. I just found it amusing with the "fair trial" quote and then the "He won't be able to walk free."frigidmagi wrote:Just how would you prove him innocent? He's the guilty and there's no way around it.Begin the show trial!

They are probobly fighting for an Islamic theocracy not Saddam. Since Saddam is fundermentalist he would not support a theocratic regime. Hence the terrorists are not interested in securing Saddams release.Lord Poe wrote:Isn't it funny that not one of these head hunting kidnappers ever asked for Saddam's release?

EDIT : Major typo. It should be "Since Saddam is not a fundermentalist".evilcat4000 wrote:They are probobly fighting for an Islamic theocracy not Saddam. I think he's saying that its weird that no one's asked for his release for the purpose of applying a sword to his neck.evilcat4000 wrote:EDIT : Major typo. Saddam was an oppresive dicator. He killed and tortured many people. The current Iraqi regime may not be very effective but they are a lot better than Saddam. As a criminal Saddam should be punished rather than being allowed to contest in elections.Sokartawi wrote:I find it disgusting that a puppet regime put in place by the US is going to have anything to say about Saddam. So youa re saying instead of killing him or putting him away, the people of Iraq should allow him to run for the head of state? WTF!?!?!?! By that logic we should have let Hilter run for Chancellor if we captured him. That's stupid.I find it disgusting that a puppet regime put in place by the US is going to have anything to say about Saddam. Let him be in the elections, that's much more fair.

It doesn't matter. Saddam is a dead man. If he doesn't uh, hang himself in his cell , he'll be handed over to a kangaroo Iraqi court and lynched. Bush and his henchmen can't risk allowing anything resembling a fair trial, because he would be allowed to summon and cross-examine witnesses like the Nuremberg defendants were. Bush isn't about to let his daddy or Rumsfeld, or George Schultz or anyone else take the witness stand in a fair proceeding.
Prosecutor: Mr. Hussein, did you order the use of nerve gas against Kurds in 1988?
Saddam: Are you referring to the gas made from compounds supplied by the US and delivered in helicopters supplied by Uncle Sam and piloted by crews trained in Florida -all with the consent of the Reagan/ Bush administrations?
If Hussein is put in front of any proper court, he'll expose too much dirty laundry.
On the other hand, if he's subjected to swine justice, he'll become a martyr and a hero -the national leader lynched by American Imperialism. Since Bush and his crowd are both crooked and stupid, I think we'll see the latter.

Lynched by American imperialism? Puh-leeze! You can blame the Americans all you want, but in the end a majority of the Iraqi people want this man brought to justice whether the Americans or the rest of the world want it or not. I'm not exactly sure who he'll be a martyr too, I guess the ex-baathists or former high level members of his regime since the fundies don't want him. Remember the disgust the rrest of the arab world had for him because he was pulled from some rat hole rather than fighting to the death?

And that would have what to do with him gassing Kurdish civilians again? Ohh wait...nothing!Elfdart wrote:Prosecutor: Mr. Hussein, did you order the use of nerve gas against Kurds in 1988?

Can you explain in what context an Iraqi court would not be "proper"?Elfdart wrote:If Hussein is put in front of any proper court, he'll expose too much dirty laundry.

That whooshing sound you hear is the point. The point is that if Saddam is given a fair trial, he calls George H.W. Bush to the stand and has his lawyer ask him embarrassing questions. And that would have what to do with him gassing Kurdish civilians again? Ohh wait...nothing!
