The old star war game and the battle of Yavin

Post by omegaLancer »

I just pick up an old Acarade game the feathure the 3 famous battles of starwars.. After playing the first part, the attack on the death star at Yavin, I realized how much better the battle of Yavin could have been..

In the game you had to battle thru squadron of tie fighters and several star destroyers just to get to the death star..

That the way it should have been...

But then the rebel strike force would be dead twenty times over.

Wolly shit, understatement on that one. You be glad the weekend just started; I just got done explaining to IG-88E about Spanky the Dolphin indiscriminate flamage when it comes to ressurecting dead threads.

So, which would be preferable? Spamming the hell out of the thread or simply STFUing it?

I can't even begin to calculate how many dollars went into that machine at the local Fun Arcade back when I was in university. Simple vector-geometry graphical display and three rounds: you vs. the TIE squadron, you over the Death Star surface, and you in the trench, dodging force shields to get to the exhaust shaft. I never had a problem with the fighters, and after a few rounds figured that the best strategy over the surface was to ignore the deflection towers. I'd pull hard to the right and dove for the surface, skimming it and saving my shield power for the trench. Sacrifice round two points to make it to the next challenge level. I was regularly getting up to Level 8 and even up to 9 before the machines began to disappear.

Cool game. I'll never understand why they withdrew it. That and Missile Command were what I blew my quarters on in the 80s.

My Wal-Mart has it and the Arcade in the big regional mall 35 miles away. I can beat AHN & ESB, but on ROTJ I only get too the bunker. Anyone beat the ROTJ?

What was it called? I night have seen one somewhere.

If they were so good, why did they remove them? Did people enjoy them so much they went broke, or were they "too old"? Do you think you could buy one of the actual machines off someone?

I ask a lot of questions.

I remember that game, it had vector graphics and a "yoke" control didn't it...

Man, I must have wasted sooo much pocket money as a kid on that baby.

Didn't they make a port for the Atari?

Are you speaking of the Star Wars Trilogy game that came out about 5-7 years ago?

Do you mean the black & white, vector based Star Wars game from 1983?
Or the one based in ROTJ called Star Wars Arcade that came out in 1994, with improved polygon graphics?
Or Star Wars Trilogy Arcade, made in 1998, with really good textured graphics?

I've only played the original game '83 game and the sequel (Empire Strikes Back) initially on my Commodore 64, and afterwards in some arcade emulators... that game was awesome.

I've never played the second one, and I've seen the third but haven't played it.

Played the third. Great fun.

Talking abot the one with the seat that you sit down

Post by omegaLancer »

It is the one found at Arcades, with a seat and a joystick, you first take on the deathstar, then the battle of Hoth and finally endor... Lot of fun ( even more without having to waste quarters when you get killed).. It sitting in my game room in a place of honor...

Ah, don't you remember that the Atari SW arcade game from 1983 also came in pilot's cockpit and stand-up console versions?

You're remembering the Sega game, I think. Came out a couple of years after the Atari model and had the more "realistic" animated graphics, but I never found it to play better than the earlier one. But you're lucky to have snagged even a Sega SW arcade game. The sort of games they've got out today aren't nearly a tenth as fun. Hardly even worth going to the arcade anymore.

You call this "old", so therefore, I must be ancient. I remember the original Star Wars game. It was old pixel style, white/black, you flew through the trench. And God, I hated the RotJ game. Those damn trees on the speederbike!

Patrick, he's talking about the SW Trilogy from just a few years ago. It's actually Lucasarts.

Games today suck. (at arcades) All they have are fighting games (ie. Tekken is about the only one) and driving games.

Somehow, I think it used some other technology than pixel, it used vector drawing which basically gave extremely smooth lines (even diagonals, no pixelattion or antialias). Not sure what are the mechanics of that.

Same as original Asteroids.

I used to play an old Star Wars arcade game at ChuckyCheese many years ago. The newer Star Wars Trilogy game that came out a few years ago was a lot better, but I get a little misty-eyed thinking about that old arcade game...
