With the massive loss in crop production from the "nuclear winter," I don't see why not.

If American frontiersmen can survive the winter of 1815 (Eighteen hundred and froze to death) then they could survive asteroids. Small communities would be re-established and you'd have larger cities rebuilt within a hundred years.

Of course, that would mess with Stirling's story, so he writes off north America.

Not to mention MEXICO, of course, which would have survived.

It's warmer there. And if anyone bothered to read the details at the back of the book, they'd notice that city states that still have a written language exist on the pacific coast and in the old Mormon areas. (Stirling's work is, I great, indefensible in the Draka series, but it has improved since then tremendously and The Peshawar Lancers is an excellent read.)

Complete Bullshit, farmers manage to grow crops in Quebec every year, yet your going to tell me that the ENTIRE United States, east of Utah, most of which is MUCH farther South (and not dependent on the Gulf Stream, will revert to cannibalism because of atmospheric dust?

WTF has Canada's crop production have anything to do with this? They still have a growing season in normal climates. With the massive barrage that hit Earth in TPL, there is no growing season for years in much of North America. There is no way to support the large populations of the United States. Some survived, yes, but most are gone.

Problem is, a nuclear winter is either a global phenomenon or it lasts less than a year

From this catastrophe you'd lose MAYBE two growing season. Lean to be sure, but hunting/gathering and collective work can get you through.

Look at a map before you spew your bullshit.

Pennsylvania, a Northern State, is at approximately the same Longitude that Southern Italy is, and in "TPL" Southern Italy/Sicily managed to grow food just fine even AFTER the Gulf Stream had been disrupted. Now taking that into account, keep in mind that most of the US is SOUTH of Pennsylvania.

Great stuff! The Draka are worse than the USSR at it's worst. Of course , your TL's Russia didn't go through Stalin's purges, so I guess they're better off militarily.

I like watching pure evil get its ass kicked.

I really enjoyed the mention of some farmboy with a Mosin-Nagant giving them fits. Maybe you could do a chapter about Zaitzev later on.
What kind of rifles do the Soviet troops carry? Are they like AKs?
Hmmm...Mikhail Kalashnikov invents his rifle ten years early...

And maybe the later American tanks can look like this:

http://www.psxa2z.com/gpgs/ss/BT1371/BT1371frnt.HTML

Four treads, and a big-ass cannon.

Or maybe go ahead and build the M-48 Patton (or M-60?).
Hehehe
Loved the grusome gory details. The characterizations are also great. You wrote the book characters like they are in the book. Except they are more like they would be in real life--total sons of bitches.
And the Soviets all have their own personalities. Good, good.

Why the hell don't they use standard unit names and standard officer titles like the rest of the frieaking world?
At some point in the 1800s, a bunch of Greco-Roman literature was discovered somewhere in Africa, and this sparks a "Classical Revival"
of the the Greek and Roman ways in the Domination. This extends into the military. It's also supposed to explain how a society made up of a bunch of reactionaries in the Victorian Age adopt a bunch of warped morals. :wtf:

Behind them, the other infantrymen of the battalion came forward, forming up in columns
behind the LT-1s, to use them as protection during the advance, and double-checked
their SVT-38 rifles.

SVT-38 is a real rifle albeit didn't replace the Mosin-Nagant in OTL Here's information.

I don't know... in this latest series, the sea of time, he has a strong black lesbian woman with a bad upbringing and an abusive husband being a complete military genius. That seems pretty uberwank to me.

Maybe just respectful of the capabilities of minority women while simultaneously acknowledging that the enemies faced by Nantucket are, for the most part, primitives who run around with bronze swords hacking wildly at the first opponent they see? And, of course, they have lots of military experience by the time they face anything more competently organized and better armed.

USSRs Declaration of War On the Draka

Post by Norseman »

USSRs Declaration of War On the Draka

24 May 1940

This note is being relayed through the American diplomatic service as our countries have no diplomatic relations following the various events of 1936. Any reply to our missive may be relayed back through the same route.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is founded upon the ideal of human equality and the desire to eradicate all economic and social oppression wherever they are found, it must be said that in as much as possible we have always endeavoured to live in peace with our neighbours and reach affable and mutually beneficial arrangements as we have with Romania, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estland, Finland & Mongolia. Such arrangements have always been made due to a clear understanding of mutual benefit, a clear sense of mutual trust, and the fact that all the mentioned nations are agreed upon the ideas and ideals of western civilization.

In truth no such arrangement has ever been made between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the Domination of the Draka, primarily because the USSR celebrates the human spirit and seeks to liberate workers worldwide and raise the standard of living for everyone; whereas the Domination of the Draka seek to bind the world to the bleached bones of the past, crush the working classes and place a yoke around their necks. In short the USSR and the Domination of the Draka are founded upon entirely opposite ideas.

Here there is no room for serious disagreement, both the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the Domination of the Draka will no doubt agree that our two nations are created with entirely different ideas and ideals. Further it is by now clear, as indeed it has been clear to the leadership of our two nations for the longest time, and the Domination of the Draka cannot exist peacefully with any other nation; such a co-existance will always be a threat to the Domination as it will give their oppressed serfs a place to escape.

The Domination of the Draka have commenced their largest attack yet on 22 May 1940, this attack, which as usual was preceded by no formal warning or declaration of war, was accompanied by the most base and brutal depravities. In the opinion of the President of the Soviet Union this constituted an act of war, and the matter was placed before the Politburo which unanimously voted in favour. It was further placed before an extra-ordinary meeting of the Supreme Soviet which also voted unanimously in favour. The Great Soviet Nation is of one heart and one soul on this matter.

This constituting the formal declaration of war and let it be known that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics considers itself to have been at war with the Domination of the Draka from the time of the Drakan invasion on 22 May 1940.

Your system of government and your entire culture is an abomination, we hereby issue our demand for your unconditional surrender and total capitulation, and give our promise that though those guilty of crimes against humanity will be harshly punished after a due trial, we shall spare the lives of the rest of your race. If you do not surrender the devastation and suffering that you will endure will be entirely on your own heads.

You wished this war, now you have it, by the will of the Soviet People this is to be a Total War fought to the time of the destruction of the Domination of the Draka.

Signed
Ivan Krasnov
President of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Alexander Shlyapnikov
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Mikhail Kalinin
Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet

[Handwritten note]

Like it or not History is on our side, we will bury you.

The reason production hasn't been as high as of late, is because I've
been working on a mod for Steel Panthers: WW2 v7 for this timeline
