The Republic class Star Destroyer

Post by Dark Primus »

I'm a little bit lost regarding when the RSD entered the service of the New Republic navy. I have been at two different sites and they don't agree with each other.

http://hangarbay.tripod.com/td-rsd.html
This battle ship was a smaller version of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, and was designed for use by the New Republic. It first saw duty during the latter stages of the Black Fleet Crisis and the battle against the Yevetha, although production was limited to a few ships.
And this site:
http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/stu/dwongfau/a ... e=Republic
It was designed by Walex Blissex, the developer of the original Victory-class Star Destroyer over thirty years before. The first ships of this class saw action during the Thrawn campaign, although they were intended almost as a stopgap measure for the New Republic's aging fleet. With the advent of the New Class Program, these ships started to see less use.

It's probably the former, since there was no mention of the Republic-class in The Thrawn Trilogy, but I honestly don't know for sure.

The BFC "Republic-class" is the Nebula-class. (Ref).

However, it's entirely possible that the Republic preceeded the New Class program (even though they have the same stats..).

The Nebula class star destroyer is being listed as a 1040 meter long cruiser and the Republic class star destroyer is stated to be a 1250 meter long cruiser.
The new Republic star destroyer program is made up by three type of ships:
Republic class
Nebula class
Defender class

Defender and Nebula have the EXACT same stats, the Defender was created by mistake, but it has now replaced the Nebula name. So there's only the DSD and RSD, which both have different lengths and are radically different in appearance.

RSD was phased out by New Class ships, as noted in the second quote, which is why we don't see them ever.

Which would indicate that they were built closer to Thrawn's era.

IIRC, the Republic immediately precedes the introduction of the New Class.

Just out of curiousity, are there any official images on the 'net that show the RSD?

Yech. Reminds me of the Razzia from Aliens: Genocide.

EDIT: Not sure how reliable that site is, as it features a Battletech WarShip and the Sulaco as SW-verse ships.

EDIT THE SECOND: But yeah, it does look authentically hideous.

IIRC, Saxton discounts that drawing of that RSD, esp. because it doesn't match the text description of it.

yes i knew that.

However from the descriptions of new stardestroyers in NJ, i had assumed that they were slightly smaller than an ISD, yet had the same amount of weapons and such things.although it might just take into account for the removel of troop areas and AT-ST and AT-AT storage. i would also assume that there would be more automated sytems, because there is no way that the NR could full crews on ships of those size.

Or to be more clear Trade Federation had special pilot and security version of their Battledroids that they used as crew for their ships.
